Nope. Not sure. But we have pretty consistent advertising from Mallory and the earliest ads for the Coast to Coast are early 50's. Is it possible they started the model in late 40's? Sure.

Yeah this guy had no logo protector in the liner indicative to pre 50's hats. This liner is a post WWII Mallory liner so like maybe 47' to 49'. I have a blue Mallory that looks like this one ,but it is older in my opinion. I'm going to post thread on it soon.

I see ads from 1944-1955


This hat has the 1917 logo and paper tag so its not earlier that 1947, but there are plenty of 1950's hats without plastic protectors--not a useful dating device beyond very limited specific hats so no way to distinguish it from examples up to 1953 or so and then only if they began to reduce the brim width at that time. ...Unless you have a stamp or associated paperwork.

Well It's not my number one dating technique. I go off of Brim, Ribbon, bow, crown height and the liner mostly. I knew i was right on the money with 47 to 49 with this one. My mid night blue is could be older than this one since it's brim is slightly wider. Secondary things i look for when dating is the logo protector, union stamps, and size labels etc. The Coast to Coast is very nice model.

About 2 1/2'' It's shorter than my Midnight blue mallory's and that one is 2 3/4''

Picked up my first Mallory off eBay last weekend. It was delivered yesterday. Mallory Ten Homburg. A nice chocolate brown, with a copper-tinged, brown ribbon.

Why do so many hats come from Wisconsin?



From reading through this thread, it appears to me that this hat is post-Stetson purchase (1817 Logo), but the cloth size tag places it before 1946-47? There are no re-order tags under the sweat, just the Union Label. It's in excellent shape. No mothing, very clean, the sweat, as you can see from the debossments, has light wear. This is my second Homburg, the other being a newer Selentino. The color and softer crown on this, I think, will make it easier to wear in a less "formal" setting.

Note: The box didn't come with the hat. I fortuitously bought that at an antique mall a few weeks ago to store some older Stetson in.

Just fished this off the bay, this is gonna be one of my RatRod hats. I'm planning on reblocking open crown with a flat brim, get the liner tacked in again, sweat might not be salvageable. I'm thinking it's closer to late 40's (pre-Stetson) no way it's 1910 as the description says despite they got a date from another ebay'er.

Was also noticing in addition to the cloth size tag the logo on the sweat is the slab serif Mallory

Hey everyone!
Just found this one at the thrift store... was wondering if any Mallory experts could date it for me. Specs: 2" overwelt brim, 4 1/2" open crown. Also, what does "aristocrat quality" mean in terms of the felt?

The size tag is shiny gold colored, felt is very nice feeling, not sure if it was supposed to be a shallow crown fedora or a porkpie. Thanks in advance for all help.

The "established 1817" means it was produced after Stetson acquired Mallory in the mid 1940's. That's not much help but all i got!

Moehawk, you can find a logo changes by year compilation elsewhere in this thread. Also, you can compare the logos and fonts to the ads in the Mallory Ad thread -> Mallory Ads . You should be able to narrow down the hat's year of manufacture with those tools.

Also, the paper tag puts it post what, '47? I went through this thread just recently because of my first Mallory purchase (see brown Mallory Ten upthread). It seems they still used the cloth size tags until '46 or '47, then switched to paper.

If that was addressed to me, no.

However, for reference, Buler indicates that Mallory was purchased by Stetson in August 1946. So my '43 number was pulled from misfired synapses. If the liner says 1817, it's a Stetson Mallory and post '46. They likely used up the old liners, sweats and size tags during the first couple of years, so, from what I've gleaned, 1817 liner = post '46 purchase, but a cloth size tag puts it closer to '46, while the switch to a paper size tag indicates it's later. There could be some differences in sweat markings, as well, but I don't know. So my "educated guess" is that an 1817 liner and paper size tag puts it closer to 1950 or so. The one I posted upthread is likely '47 or '48, maybe.

Moehawk, this was one of Mallory's quality/price level designations. I don't think anyone knows what is really means. Possibly the higher price level meant higher quality materials or a higher level of finishing. Or it may have been a marketing strategy.

Either way, it's some nice feeling felt. I wouldn't be surprised if it were at least part beaver.
