Thinking about a work of Art

It begins

Well, I started the ball rolling on creating something. The conformer shipped out today and should be here early next week. Now I've got to think about what would work best both in terms of style and color. I'm thinking something with a fairly wide brim, medium height crown, and a fair bit of rake to it in either blue smoke or a grey of some sort (I have to take a look at the colors). Does anybody have any other suggestions as to style? (I will post a picture or two of my mug up here sometime in the next couple of days to shock and horrify and maybe prompt some recommendations).

Thanks,
Charles

When I ordered my hat with Art I sent him pictures of me in every fedora I had at the time and the dimensions of the hats. It ended up working out great for me as I like the dimensions of my VS. Deciding on just one hat is a problem.:rage: There are so many amazing options and variations, but rest assured that Art will build you an amazing hat.

If it comes out looking half as good as the others of his that are posted on here, I will be happy. There are just so many choices. And once I have taken a look at color I will definitely send Art some pictures and hopefully I can come up with something amazing by talking to him and using people on here as a sounding board.

Just finished with my conformer today. I changed from a HST to a
Route 66 style for my first hat. It's Blue Smoke for me gents. That will be a great versatile color for me. I wish I had thought to send a pic of my big noggin. Maybe I still will.

Art told me what he thought looked good and what didn't, and then designed the perfect hat.

I'm getting two new Arts (one pure VS, the other a makeover) on Monday - a Stratoliner Repro in Sahara and a raised-from-the-dead-like-Lazarus Open Road. He also re-ribboned my all-black Borsalino, so that it now draws regular remarks of "hey, nice hat".

How come the bow is on the right? It can't be a mirror image because your watch face is the correct way around.

So I have now ordered my first work of Art. I received and returned the conformer. I've ordered the basic fedora. I started with the silverbelly HST model, but told him I didn't want the ice colored ribbon or gold pin, but just a matching silverbelly ribbon and brim binding. So I guess it's not the HST, but close, also close to a Stetson OR style hat. Now I just wait..............

I'm already thinking of my next one.

Then a third.

I also sent Art pics. It's a great way idea to do so.

I agree that it's hard to decide. Within weeks of receiving my first, I ordered my second. My second isn't even here and I'm tempted to order my third!

Well, I just received felt samples and conformer from Art, and now I am stuck deciding between blue smoke, granite, and steel. Any recommendations?

I had a hard time deciding between those same colors so I may not be any help. I went with steel, but the wife wanted me to use the granite. I think blue smoke will be the next one I get-whenever that is. All in all, I really like the steel for a dark hat, but the blue smoke is tops for a light hat- I think. You have a tough choice ahead of you. What are you thinking style-wise? Are you going with a summer hat, unlined or a lined hat? Maybe tossing ideas around for the style will help with the color choice.:D

I was in the same boat but I wanted an "Artlite" so it was an easy choice for me since only Granite is available as a featherweight.

Some contrast in the bow would be nice. I was thinking possibly something blue (although a nice, deep red would work as well), but I don't know. Is there a comprehensive list of Art's ribbons on here somewhere?

First thought. I was very much sold on a blue smoke for a first. I talked to Art about it and included a general description of my wardrobe. Art stated that he often recommends a granite for a first hat. I did mine with a dark bluish ribbon (sorry! camera on the fritz) and I have to say the blue smoke went way down the list of priorities. The granite is a spectacularly flexible color- it goes with nearly everything I wear from a dark blue suit to blue jeans and a sweater. But the second thought is, talk to Art- his reputation for good taste and listening is well earned!! (And yes, I'm already back in line again). :)
