Top hats with tails only?

Really? I thought that was a hard rule. (Tails only, including white tie, morning dress, etc.)

That would be my position - I'm not personally a fan of the look of the tall hat with a short jacket. There are a few folks here who hold a different position. We did discuss this on a thread a few weeks ago; while I think the "official rule" was tails only, Metropd did indeed produce some great photos from back in the day where folks were wearing them even with lounge suits.

Its the 21st century. I say a top hat with any tux! However, it does look more "proper" with tails or a frock coat.
