Glad I could help, Buddy. Shuron has great customer service.

BTW, I have a good friend that lives in Penticton, BC. Nothing as beautiful as living in the Great White North, eh! :)

Many eyeglasses, including some vintage styles like Windsors, brow ridge designs like the Ronsir Zyl, and even Wayfarers are also available cheaply at my favorite eyeglass web site. They're generic brands, but should give the right look to anyone on a budget...or just anyone who thinks that prescription glasses are WAY too expensive.

They won't actually be vintage, and will include modern conveniences like AR coatings, but the prices are unbelievable.

I'm waiting for this pair (my Superman glasses) to come in the mail. Should be here any day...

Other classic styles include these:

My ophthalmologist is truly impressed by the quality of the prescription lenses, as well as their accuracy (I already have several pairs)...and at as little as $8 per pair, including lenses, there's no reason to not have a selection at home.

Vintage eyeglass frames in NYC

I am giving in to the fact my world is getting more and more blurry. I am going to need glasses and I'd like to get a nice pair or two of original 20's/30's frames or perhaps something modern with an understated golden era look to them. I'm not so comfortable with glasses so would like to try them on before purchasing.

So any suggestions on places to go in NYC?

Sorry. No suggestions for you, but if you feel like doing some footwork try some on at an optomertrist and make note of your proper size and take a look on e-bay.
I got a great pair of vintage 1940's American Optical frames there and had my prescription put in them.

Glasses

Sorry all if this is posted in the wrong place...I have searched but I couldn't find.....could be blind, pardon the pun ;)

I'm looking for cats eye glasses, I think it's the 30's but not 100%. Does anyone know if you can change them to modern day perscriptions?

thank you
:)

Very easy to do. I had a pair that were more of a wire rim on the bottom cat's eye. Just brought them into a bigger chain prescription/eyeglass shop and they did it for about $35. Just call and ask if they are willing first.

Cats eye glasses are 1950's. The main thing you have to be careful of is the rhinestone insets; when optometrists heat the glasses frames to insert the new lenses, the rhinestones could pop out from their settings as they are simply glued in.

Also, if you take a special prescription (like me) you may not be able to have custom lenses made. Be sure to have a talk with your optometrists before investing in frames, to confirm these potential problems and the cost of the labor involved.

Yes, I would look at the Shuron site and look for an optometrist who will order from them. They have an excellent reputation and make several vintage styles. I love that last pair posted and want to try those on.
I need new glasses, too.
For 3o's style, you probably want wire rims, round or rounded on top. Something like this from American Optical

or this from Smarteyes

I actually think this style will be easier to find than cateyes, which is what I want.

Kitty, do you use OPSM? I have had a terrible time trying to get them to do anything extra or special or different for me.
I asked to have some lenses put into a pair of vintage frames, no can do. I asked for prescription sunnies, no can do. They even limit my choice of frames to about three and then say, choose from those, even if I am willing and able to pay the difference! I have the highest health coverage on my private insurance and would have paid any difference to get the frames I wanted, but they said it could not be done!
I am going to go to a specialist glasses place in Vic Park next time for glasses, but man, I am used to better service than that! I know I am hard to fit, have a narrow face, narrow bridge on my nose and a thick prescription, but in the US I never had any of those problems. Is that common here in Australia or do I just use a crappy OPSM?

No Esme Ive never used OPSM. Hubby works in the workshop at Just Spectacles so anything I need done I go through him. I dont wear glasses so its mainly just getting him to fit or tint lenses n generally fix up glasses one of us has found in opshops etc. I dont know what theyre like to deal with officially but my grandmother goes to them all the time so they must be ok. Shes just had a new pair of lenses fitted in glasses she bought in Hong Kong n they didnt have any problem. If you ever have anything you cant get sorted ( anything except filling prescription) lemme know n Ill see if hubby can help.

Hubby gave me this link the other day. Thought you guys might be interested. Its sunglasses but still ultra cute. Look under Cats Eyes and Retro. Not sure if they post to anywhere but oz but they should do.

Thanks for that Kitty!
I just want some glasses with those Shuron cat's eye frames. I lurve them desperately. I will see this friend of my husband's in Vic Park and see what she can do.
I wanted to tell you that when you see me on IM and then I change to being unavailable, I am not avoiding you. It's not me. My husband has been on my computer doing diagnostic stuff and all and if anyone comes on IM besides the kids he clicks unavailable or appear offline.
I thought I would be online more over the weekend, but he commandeered my computer when his crashed twice!!!
