I purchased 3 fedoras yesterday at a costume shop. I was passing by the window and just happened to look in and saw several on a rack. One is a Borsalino, but the other two I am not familiar with and was wondering if someone has any info on the makers. One maker is Wright Mirakal and the other is Portis (Supreme). Either of these sound familiar?

What age do you think the Borsalino is?

Thanks for the help.

I own a brown Portis with a bound edge. Though I haven't seen many Portis hats, nor am I familiar with their history, I like the one I own. It has a nice feel to the felt. I paid ten bucks for mine in a thrift shop. Like THAT was a difficult decision! ;)

The two I am familiar with are the Borso of course, and the Portis. Portis was a brand that went after the college crowd and was VERY stylish in design, very good construction, overall a very nice hat normally. The seemed to give more "rake" to the crown.

Thanks guys.

Ok Art, what is the rake?

Can you give me a range on the age of the Borsalino?

Glad to see you are back!

Judging by the liner and the sweatband my guess is that it is a late sixties Borsalino. I am not sure if the sweatband was replaced at some time in its life though. That would make it about ten years earlier if it has been replaced. The style looks to be wrong for the 60s sweatband though so it probably was replaced from a later era.
I guess that saves you the trouble of replacing it now but it sure confounds the dating process. :p

Regards to all,

J

Mark, the angle that the crown drops from front to back is the "rake" . The more rake, the more it seems sortof...sporty. lighthearted, etc. Kindof like giving a hat a severe tilt over on eye when wearing. Less conservative
