This was on a four-lane section of Route 66 (now I-44) near Marshfield, Missouri. Missouri’s Historic Highways Facebook page states: “Kermit and Letha Lowery wanted to make sure that travelers remembered the name of the cafe they opened in 1952 on US between Conway and Marshfield. So they named it the Garbage Can. The place was known for its little round pies, a recipe Letha inherited from the Harris Cafe in Conway. The Garbage Can closed in 1973 and the building is crumbling off I-44 at Exit 107.”

When I was old enough to go in myself, we'd pull in, my dad would give me money and stay in the car, tell me what kind of ice-cream he wanted, my mom would say what she wanted, then my dad told me to get whatever ice-cream I wanted and, as I was walking away from the car, I'd hear a "and bring me all the change."

Never once in my life did I short or keep change from my dad - that was way, way out of bounds in my house - but still, the "and bring me all the change" line came out every single time.

I'd come back to the car, hand him the change (he'd count it), give him his ice-cream (which my mom would hold till he got us back on the highway), gave my mom hers, hopped in the back and away we went.
