I probably younger and less experienced then everyone else here, but I'm going to give my two cents anyway.
I actually rarely sport a proper suit, mostly on account of having only one I like. (A classic inspired 1980's pinstripe number.) When I want to dress up, I do the sports jacket and odd trousers thing the others mentioned. My usually sport a pair of decent loafers, khakis, with a casual patterned sports shirt or polo. Sometimes with a tweed waistcoat. Usually topped with a newer (80's or 90's) London Fog weather jacket with a zip-out lining. Not formal by any means, but many still consider me the most well dressed person they know. Mind you, I live in San Antonio. People here think it's okay to wear pajamas in public.
