Tomorrow is Truck Day*, the most sacred holiday in the New England calendar, so in honor of it I'm listening to baseball -- specifically the 1938 All Star Game, from Crosley Field in Cincinnati, where Lefty Grove of the Red Sox is mowing the National League down in the 8th inning, and there is no snow on the ground anywhere.

* -- Truck Day, the day the Red Sox equipment truck leaves Boston for Spring Training. People gather on the street outside Fenway park to celebrate surviving another winter. If you lived here, you'd understand why.

Diana Dors - aka Diana Fluck - a great charachter!

“ They asked me to change my name. I suppose they were afraid that if my real name Diana Fluck was in lights and one of the lights blew...

She lived down the road from a mate of mine who was living on a lane in Sunningdale Berkshire. Her husband never recovered from her early death and suicided.

Because the only thing better than Frank Sinatra is Frank Sinatra in a post-apocalyptic wasteland:

They’re goin’ through a music revolution
The hippies say they’ll overcome us all
While they’re blowin’ smoke and air pollution
We’re hangin’ in with help from Geritol.

They’re rounding up the squares in California
They’re picking off our heroes in New York
But they’ll never take away our Champagne Music
As long as Lawrence Welk can pop his cork

They still do the polka in Milwaukee
Still do the wants in Tennessee
Still pickin’ bluegrass in ol’ Kentucky
With old-fashioned country harmony
So give me some beer drinkin’ music
And play that Double Eagle March For me
For they still do the polka in Milwaukee
So let me hear that one-a, two-a, three

The big wheels at the network started spinnin’
The verdict was the Hee-Haw had to go
Cause city slickers don’t believe in grinning’
And who the hell needs jokes in Kokomo

They cancelled all the singin’ and the pickin’
But the stubborn little donkey wouldn’t leave
And that little fella’s still alive and kickin’
And Hee Haw is laughin’ up its sleeve (HEE HAW)

They still do the polka in Milwaukee
Still do the waltz in Tennessee
Still pickin’ bluegrass in ol’ Kentucky
With old-fashioned country harmony
So give me some beer drinkin’ music
And play that Double Eagle March For me
For they still do the polka in Milwaukee
So let me hear that one-a, two-a, three
While we swing to that good old country music
For Hee Haw is good enough for me
Yes Hee Haw is good enough for me

Charleston Serenaders -- Tandstickparaden (Swedish) (1930)
(Matchstick Parade)
vocal by Folke Lindberg

Recorded in London for the Columbia label, the Charleston Serenaders was a pseudonym for a number of European -- notably Swedish and Hungarian -- dance bands. There's also an English version of this song by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra.

Radio for an oatmeal supper by ---

It's November 13, 1937 and it's the National Barn Dance, direct from the WLS Hayloft, with Joe Kelly, Uncle Ezra, Lulu Belle and Scotty, the Hoosier Hot Shots, and special guest Alec Templeton, the brilliant blind comedian-pianist who seems to be completely forgotten today. He might seem to be a trifle too fey to fit in among among all the clodhoppers and overalls on this program but the Barn Dance was a far more eclectic program than it's ever gotten credit for being. One of the most popular programs of the 1930s, and very much deservedly so.
