Hey Matt:
Per Smithsonian:
Stains & Spots
  • Some fungi and some bacteria produce colors as they grown. These may attach tenaciously to the fibers. Xerophilic fungi produce rust-colored spots. Often seen on the pages of old books or antique linens, these freckle like spots called ‘foxing’ are the result of a melanin type exudate, not rust. Oxidative bleaching with hydrogen peroxide may reduce the color but will further weaken the cloth or paper.

Anyone reading this know exactly what causes that reaction? Is it a form of oxidation?

Thanks.

Xerophilic fungi is much, much more interesting than mere oxidation. And "exudate"... that's a secretion.

So... foxing is caused by fungus ooze or juice. (The squeamish may <<SHUDDER>> here.)

NW Hats road trip today. Here is a teaser, more later in the appropriate threads. My new "Bone Lord's Hat" (sounds ominous). This bone felt color is a trip! Mike says Hi to all of you.

That’s a superb hat Mike! I’m very impressed with the bone color and your hat has some great proportions. I’m also liking the kettle curl brims more and more.

P. & C. Habig Wien - Berlin "Special Qualität" with "Auto Cape". The hat was made for the P. & C. Habig Berlin store at Friedrichstrasse 82 which didn't survive WWII. I think it might be from the 1935 because "35" is last number on the paper label number sequence.

The Austrian Patent (133275) stamped on the sweatband of the above P. & C. Habig Wien - Berlin Melone with the felt insert that P. & C. Habig Wien called "Auto Cape". The patent claim is to make a stiff felt hat that is resistant to denting and the felt insert being a part of the invention.

Drawing from the French Patent(756192A).

This is the Austrian Patent(133275) from 1932 and an addendum from 1936.

This is the French Patent (756192A) from 1933. The translation might be a bit more clear in this one.

The inventor Adolf Sindermann has a good number of hat related patents. His company was a major supplier of felt stumpen, capelines, finished hats and probably a supplier to P. & C. Habig Wien - Berlin.

It was very bent up, but responded nicely to a little steam and heat.
