The Great Minnesota Get Together, Part 1

It has scarcely been a month and a half since I last wore my Montecristi, and I am already going through toquilla palm withdrawl. Here are some images of the 2011 Minnesota State Fair from the end of August, when it seemed that the long, sultry days of Summer and Panama season came to an abrupt end here in the Land Of 10,000 Lakes.





Getting off the park-N-ride shuttle bus and heading to the main entrance. Optimo Montecristi.



An event we always look forward to, but with a bit of sadness as it heralds the end of Summer.






Not sure just what this fella is wearing, but it looks vintage, and I love the crease and brim curl.



Traditional fair foods and some unexpected delicacies...all on a stick.









One of our favorite root beers: the locally brewed, corn-syrup free 1919.

The roast corn at the fair is one of the food highlights for us. Just outstanding.

Even toddlers love their corn.






No reason to question the statistics, which indicate our state fair to be the second largest in America, and the largest based upon average daily attendance.



The Iceman cometh.



Most of the current livestock barns were built in the '20s to '30s, with some older structures as well.

'Uwharrie's Showdown', a beautiful 12 year old chestnut Saddlebred gelding eyeing my hat for his morning snack.

Unglamorous work, cleaning up after cattle, but somebody's got to do it.

One of my favorite quarries on flyrod, Salvelinus fontinalis, in full spawning colors. This mature male has developed a pronounced kype on its lower jaw. Our DNR has done an admirable job of preserving the native population in our state.






Bacon Lover.



Yet another of our fair favorites, and an annual indulgence.



The purveyor of the Big Fat Bacon concession sporting a good looking straw. Many concessionaires earn their entire annual income in the 12 day span of the fair.
