You seem to have hit upon the answer. The y do seem to have a number of versions. Apparently used by Polish Lancers in Napoleons Forces.

Hey rlk, I do like any Napoleanic paintings and prints. Maybe it's a lancer garrison cap so's not to get the real helmet dirty? When I first saw that, I thought about a life sized chessboard like royalty used to play in the old days and maybe one of the human pieces wearing that hat to be in costume. A rook or fancy pawn?
