... Should I give Paranormal Activity a chance?

Nope. There was nothing interesting or thrilling at all about Paranormal Activity. It was an over-hyped bore of a film.

I hated Blair Witch - I remember watching it in the cinema and wondering what on earth all the fuss was about - I think all the hype surrounding it killed it for me. I wouldn't compare the two to be honest - the only thing they have in common is a low budget. I would be interested to hear what you think about it if you get a chance to see it.

I'll keep an eye out for it, then...

On the whole I love horror films - particularly of the psychological type - like the French movies "Ils" - have you seen it?

That's not one I've caught, no.... though I've yet to meet a genre of horror I didn't like. The psychological stuff is often the best.... and me, I have a weakness for the schlocky B features too - anything with zombies or Bruce Campbell in it is bound to attract my attention... Low budgets often do result in a much creepier film as they are of necessity forced to feature much of the gore off-shot. And no special effects can ever match the human mind for the power to frighten and disturb! This is, of course, the reason that - fun as the sequels were - it is the original Evil Dead that is genuinely creepy, or that the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre maintains an intensity that various sequels, prequels, remakes and imitators fail to match.

I still feel that it's a beautiful-looking flick that entertainingly references a boatload of 30s/40s stuff... but it's dramatically DOA. Dumb plot, terrible pacing, lame dialog, and little-to-no chemistry between the actors... It proves that they should never let somebody who's never directed a movie before, and whose skills are that of a maverick techno-nerd rather than a storyteller, helm a feature!

I concur on all counts--great looking film, poor storytelling. And it definitely had the look of the Fleischer cartoons.

Yesterday I watched 1938's "Holiday," with Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and Edward Everett Horton, and directed by George Cukor.

Fury, 1936, with Spencer Tracy and Sylvia Sidney, directed by Fritz Lang. Amazing. One part love story, one part horrifying lynch madness, one part courtroom drama. Tracy pulls out all the stops, but never chews the scenery.

Lang does some great shots with an actor in the background doing something disconnected with the dialogue going on in foreground. In the courtroom scene, watch the actor playing Tracy's brother Charlie, slightly out of focus but visable over Sylvia Sidney's shoulder. He seems uninterested in what's going on, but when there's a sudden distraction, both he and Sidney react simultaneously with swift jerking of the heads towards the noise.

Ha, possibly! It is an insult to horror cinema to put Paranormal Activity in that genre.

I just watched the movie Pearl Harbor again with a little more critical eye and I appeal to the jury that I must recant my previous testimony. Holy ****, did they butcher the history!!! I see what you guys are talking about now. Originally I watched the movie more for the story than anything else but when you look at the facts, they're all screwed up beyond recognition. I won't go into all the fooches that I saw but I now throw myself on the mercy of the court. :kick: shakeshead

I watched 'The Maltese Falcon' on Monday night. Since giving up cable, we rotate through our dvd collection and I'm on 30s binge lately, all due to hairstyles.

Julie & Julia - Meryl Streep was superb (as always) and I enjoyed the movie but would have preferred if the movie was solely based on her life - I really wanted to know more about her. For me the "Julie" part of the story was just all terribly dull and detracted from the story.

There's no question that the "Julia" portion of the film was more interesting than the "Julie" portion, though Amy Adams is always a pleasure to watch. But how could she possibly compare to Meryl Streep's fantastic performance as Julia? (Streep's incredible, but that's old news.)

Also, the Julie half of the story just didn't have all that great forties/fifties style, or a compelling supporting cast. Certainly, the guy who played her husband was no Stanley Tucci.

And speaking of great casting: I thought Jane Lynch was fantastic as Julia's even taller and louder sister!

I wasn't going to argue with her.

Here it was the other way. I finally persuaded my wife to see it.
Her comment was: "OK - but too much flying for my taste"
I said: "Well it's just like a George Clooney movie - too much George Clooney for my taste"

I mean, what did she expect - should they ride bicycles?

The last movie I watched was a gross out Hungarian flick called Taxidermia. The whole time I wanted to puke but I couldn't look away cause it was so damn interesting. If your have the Netflix it's on the streaming so you don't have to waste a mailer if you can't get through it.

Was Sherlock Holmes good? My guy wants to get the dvd of it.

Yes,..although I only caught the last third or so, it was quite good. I will see the entire thing.
Has a cool steam punk vibe, and Robert Downey Jr. is better in the role of Holmes than I expected. Not that I don't like him as an actor, he is one of the best in my opinion,..it's just that Basil Rathbone was the definitive Holmes for so many years.
