Why all the "GOODBYE" threads?

Several Loungers have asked, quite reasonably, why I'm posting these "GOODBYE" threads, and whether I'd consider offering the items directly via the Fedora Lounge, instead of (or before) eBay. Good questions.

I'm a strong believer in photographically documenting one-of-a-kind vintage items, and then sharing these photos with Fedora Loungers. Once the items are sold, I (and the rest of us here) may never see them again. That's why I'm posting these "goodbye" threads; so that everyone can further their "visual education" regarding some rarely-seen vintage clothing.

As for the second question, I'll be quite honest with you. I've had a lot of luck on eBay, more than I ever expected when I started selling there back in August. (For instance, a 1940s "nude" tie of mine recently sold there for over $300. Never did I expect it to go for so much.) The point is that folks on eBay have been buying my stuff for more than I would consider pricing it. This makes it *very* difficult for me to know what kind of fixed price I could (or should) put on my items. eBay (or rather, Adam Smith's "invisible hand" of capitalism) does a better job of it than I ever could.

All the best,
Marc

And we appreciate the history lesson that has gone with each of these posts. We've put all of them down in the classifieds forum where everybody can see them as one collection.

I don't think ill of you for wanting to get the best price for your goods, either. In fact, I think if you listed the ebay link for each item you post here, the price may go even higher than it will from just listing it on ebay. Lots of vintage dealers and collectors look at the Lounge on a regular basis to find things that they wouldn't ordinarily find on Ebay.

I understand, Zohar. Your points are well taken. I have just one regret: that "lurkers" not registered with the Fedora Lounge will not have access to the Classifieds section, so they won't be able to see photos of the stuff.

My priority is that the photos be shared with anyone who might want to see them. The important thing for me is to contribute to the "visual library" of vintage clothing. Nobody really needs to know that I'll be selling the stuff -- and it's true that I don't need to say (in other sections) that they'll be on sale. (As you pointed out, the "Classifieds" section is the best place to mention this.)

All the best,
Marc

And what an education it is! I'm glad you post those photos here for us Marc.
They are indeed amazing items and I enjoy seeing them and reading your comments about them very much.

If they are not willing to join, then they don't deserve to see these treasures.
