Dear Friends,

I often turn to film for inspiration for my dress and style. One of my favorites is
“The Wings of the Dove.” The cinematography, art design, costumes, and colors are extraordinary; all of the things that add up to the film’s style.

This morning, I was watching it on my lap-top and playing with a new function on my computer: the ability to do screen grabs, which I have always wanted to do, to research hats and gear from films. I had no idea that a stock Apple iBook G4 is capable of doing this. But, I digress…

I decided to share some images of this film with you all of the costumes and overall look.

I’m curious of what you think of the film, the costumes, the settings, et cetera.

I think you'll all recognize "The Turn!" I'm not sure if they meant his hat to be this way, but it's still a great look, if it were straight. He has a very strange ribbon that seems to have little tails or it is coming off (there isn't a clear shot in the film).

This will be me this November:

Here is another pic of that hat:

I used that hat as inspiration for one I asked Art to make for me, which I will be posting about later. ;) :)

I love the look of the rain-drenched fedora, on other people, that is:

Hem, if you like this you might like 'a room with a view' also starring miss bonham-carter. it's edwardian set, but some of the men's clothes are great, and look more 20s.

(my mac used to do screen-grabs but has stopped doing it. now it just gives me an annoyed 'ping' whenever i try)

Yes, "Howards End" and "A Room With A View" are two of my favorites. I was just speaking to Daisy about this: "Howards End" is on cable daily and has been for the 15 or so years it has been out. "The Wings of the Dove" was absent for a while, but now it is on all of the time. "A Room With A View" is never on. I wonder why some films are played ad nauseam, while others are ignored?

Room With a View

One of my all -time favorites. Had to plant cornflowers after I saw it.

Thanks for posting these pics. I've been using them as inspiration for the Edwardian hat that I am making. What a great film, one can never watch it too many times. "Howards End" and "A Room With a View" are also great, clothes inspirational films. Thanks for sharing these pics with me, you know my frustration is growing in finding proper fitting Edwardian garb. Now that I'm learning to sew, these pictures will help in the design of dresses I'm hoping I'll be able to make.
