Worlds heaviest denim shorts - Soso 33oz cut off shorts!

Some like it thick n heavy!

Ever since I got a Samurai Jeans monster belt earlier this year - I’ve been wanting to buy a pair of heavy denim shorts to go with it. And yes I’m a shorts person for temps higher than 18 Celsius and I pair shorts with heavy HH MC jackets

The heaviest I could find was Samurai 21 Oz and it cost an absolute fortune.

So by chance I saw someone on eBay selling a pair of almost new Soso 33oz jeans at 34 size which is 1.5-2 sizes bigger for me. I paid £125 and thought it was a steal! Too bad the legs are so baggy so I thought why not turn them into cutoff shorts!

For cutoff point I referred to a pair of size L Cactus Industry waxed canvas shorts which fit me so well and it’s baggy so not too hot in summer either.

Turned out satisfactory and I know the threads at the hem roll can be a bit of eye sore but I do want to keep the roll in place. I thought about using deerskin to wrap the hem roll but that’d covered the selvedge on the side - so opted for the heaviest linen threads for saddle stitch bridle hides.

One benefit of having 1.5-2 sizes larger waist, is I can pull on/off these Soso without having to undo the finger killer buttons!

I used to think the size 36 Samurai Jeans belt I bought was way too long for my 31 waist - I can barely buckle up at the hole second to last over these Soso shorts.

One of a kind! I’ll enjoy sweating in them next summer. I do plan to wash these regularly so the waist may well shrink a bit.

I really like how you’ve tacked the cuffs into place.

If you enjoy sewing heavier fabric and leather, having a sailers palm, and/or a Handistitch Sewing Awl, are both fantastic tools.

I hate wearing shorts, myself, but I VERY often pair my MC jackets with jeans and flip flops!

(Edit!) and what are you doing with the cut off legs? I bet they’d make great elbow patches on a work jacket, or maybe patch pockets?

I’ve seen that awl on YouTube and may well get one. I usually use two saddle needles to do saddle stitch.

The cut offs are amazing fabric. What I plan to do is - and I bet this will sound strange - is to sew inside pockets for my jiujitsu gi so I can store a gum shield for sparring - taking no risks as I saw a friend knocking off his tooth against someone’s knee.

The gi is made from 4-500gsm cotton fabric so the 33oz denim would be a good match. Pity is I can only flash the cool inside pocket when putting gi on /taking it off

I love to see rigged clothing for function, for ease/laziness, out of limited skill set, and other reasons other than just aesthetics. I ran into a pair of jeans on the back of a music album cover once, and I could never find a similar fit, so I bought a large pair of dungarees and rigged the leg hems to mimic a similar look (no cutting or creating a new hem). I can mend just fine, but I'm no tailor. I liked the results enough that I then did it to a pair of worsted wool WWII trousers that were cut with massive amounts of leg room. Neither are the prettiest, but they function exactly how I wanted.

No, not strange at all! I practiced AiKido for years and have some double weight grappling gi’s, and that’s an awesome use for the fabric.

OP inspired me to get a pair myself, thanks for documenting this! I have had the black N&F 32oz for a long time (bought for half off at the time), and gotten used to the heavyweight denim scene. I remember when I first wore my 32oz, it felt like scraping my knees on carpet. (Quick tip: personally I didn’t like the thick leather patch, so I removed it and used as keychain. The jeans feels lighter.)

I’ve been thinking about the Soso 33oz as well, and a used pair in my size appeared at a price I couldn’t resist. The hem opening measures 6.5” so it shouldnt have any bagginess issues. Fingers crossed that it doesn’t become shorts, but either way!

Did you see N&F came out with 40oz earlier this year as the world’s current heaviest denim? I heard retail price was $1.6k - over $2k and they sold out in seconds… I guess only YouTubers and influencers are able to afford to buy cool stuff now, the rest of us peasants would patiently wait for used items.

OK I now have a saved search on eBay in case someone got fed up and want to flog these as secondhand!!

I love my Soso cutoff shorts - I’d since redone the stitching using heavy black kevlar thread and the stitching now looks more discrete vs the white linen I had before.

I’ve a 31-32 waist depending on how much pizzas I binge so these shorts at 34 fit loose, but great that I don’t need to do/undo that button - just pull up and pull off with button fastened at all time.

Only 11 pairs of 40oz were released so you might have to wait for a long time because not all of them were in your size(s).

Interesting, my sanforized Soso 33oz, which looks very little worn, still weighs 3.1 lbs. The previous owner artificially did some superficial aging but I don’t mind it. This is still so stiff that I bet it can stand up on its own. Fit pic at the end.

My unsanforized N&F 32oz, which I’ve worn on and off for 11 years, now weighs only 1.7 lbs. After washing it, it should have been heavier at 34.5oz or so. Its crotch has worn out and been patched up. It’s much softer now. This pair is so warm and has carried me through so many winters in some of the coldest states in the US. It prob lost 1.4 lbs or so from wearing out and bacteria eating the fabric.

I don’t have any other heavyweight denims to compare to. I only wore 12-15 oz before.

I want to try Iron Heart 21oz, I’ve felt the fabric in person and it’s so soft for its weight.
