A Sartorial Question: Do you Fit Hat to Clothes or Other Way 'Round

Just curious, but do you guys pick your clothes first and then decide which of your hats will go with them or do you start by thinking about the hat and choose the clothes to fit the hat? Me, I have enough hats, styles and colors to go either way, but I still choose the clothes first then pick the hat that goes with the ensemble.

Clothes first then the hat...which also leads me to buying new hats when i get a new suit that doesn't match any of my headwear.

Honestly some days I might pick an outfit based upon the hat I want to wear, and I might pick the hat based upon the outfit I've chosen, but in the end it hardly matters, because option 3 is closer to the truth, and besides with 2 grey fedoras, a panama, a herringbone cotton khaki castro cap, and an olive wool castro cap making up the bulk of my collection, and a wardrobe consisting mostly of earth tones and blue denim, it's not like I really own a hat that I can't wear with whatever I happen to be wearing.

Clothes first, usually. If it's a newer hat, or one I'm really itching to wear, then I will pick clothes to match the hat.

Typically, I pick the clothes first. Some days I just want to wear a particular hat, so in that case I would pick the hat first and clothes to go with it.

Most of the time it's general attire first, then the hat. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the hat always comes last. Usually I start with whatever item is most appropriate for the occasion & weather. Might be shoes, suit,... then the rest follows. I don't really think about the sequence while dressing; I start somewhere, and one item leads to the next options. If I do feel like wearing a particular hat, I might have that one in mind while making the shirt/tie/hankie choice. It doesn't require a lot of thinking, though.

I'm another one for whom it varies. Often I'll pick a particular outfit, then match the accessories. Equally often, however, I'll just have an urge to wear a specific hat or tie or bow-tie or cufflinks or trousers or pair of shoes (in Summer, quite often it's the shoes with which I start), and the rest of the outfit will be based around that. I have dressed around a specific tie clip before now.

I have two vintage fedoras (black and fawn) that I prefer wearing and a modern grey one that I dislike, but do wear on occasion so I tend to buy my clothing with my vintage lids in mind.

I usually start with the clothes, then pick a hat (in no small part because I dress before I put on a hat!), but I sometimes plan on a particular hat and pick some clothes to coordinate.

Get out of shower, dry off, don the hat I care to wear and then figure out the rest. If someone comes in right after I have chosen the hat at least I won't feel naked.

Usually clothes first. But if I know it's going to be a hot day, for example, I will plan an outfit based on wearing a Milan. There are also certain instances where I might be going to some social event and plan an outfit around wearing a specific hat. But usually clothes first.
