Mike, that is not so difficult as it looks! I removed the straw sweatband along the seam.
Then I cut the felt along the leather sweatband, so I have a fur stripe where I can sew the straw body over the felt flange. The straw body should be a little bit larger as the fur body!
Thats all!
Look here! my first conversion with a beaver felt black and a cuenca!

Wow, no kidding! Very bold, Manfred. Cutting the crown off the black one must have required some serious intestinal fortitude.

Nothing so daring happens at my house, I'm afraid, merely an ironing out of a homburg brim. Even so, I'm pleased with the outcome and wanted to share closeups of a fairly obvious result with this simple conversion.

Here's the whole hat, after:

This is what the top of the brim looks like afterward:


And here's the bottom, where most of the grosgrain binding winds up:


It's a different look, for sure. Opinions?

The result of this " simple conversion " looks great! It's unique, " grosgrain binding winds up " most of this conversion ends so!
In my eyes it's a good look and he looks great on you!

Here is a conversion I am working on. Started out as an American Hat Co western..I cut the brim down to 2 3/8", put a 1" burgundy ribbon on ...I wanted a 1930's look with a high crown..........Still have some minor things to take care of but it is beginning to get there..

Akubra Cattleman Open Road

Here is an Akubra Cattleman that I tried to convert to an Open Road style hat. I wanted a cheap summer felt hat without a liner and some vent holes for the heat. I started with an Akubra Cattleman in Sand color, trimmed the brim to 2 3/4" and installed an Open Road ribbon I scavenged off of an old, worn out Stetson.

Looks good. I did the same thing, making my "St. Regis Special." I think the stitching on the top looks really cool.
