I unloaded this puppy on eBay a few months ago.

Absolutely gorgeous hat. 3X in a 7 1/8. Much nicer than a Whippet, but since it didn't carry that name, it went for much less. It's an interesting phenomenon that they go for such ridiculous prices just because they say "Whippet."

Hell, I'm half scared to wear mine out of the house, as it's "value" dwarfs everything else in my wardrobe, including my wedding ring!

I should probably get my CCW before wearing it out again. [emoji1]

It's a great hat. One my favorites, but not my MOST favorite. And don't as what that is, it changes week to week.

I've owned three Whippets and ended up selling all of them. A 40's 3X Stetson is a nicer hat in my humble estimation. And the right 50's Borsalinos are even better. But, hey, I'm not complaining.
Whippet is just the hot name I guess
it's like the 1950's Zildjian K cymbals ... I've heard plenty of better sounding cymbals but for some reason everyone wants those old stamp Ks and they pay out the nose for them.
same with 60's Gretsch drum kits ... the hardware is absolutely terrible on them ... but people remortgage their houses to buy them.

that being said ... I have an early 40s Vita Felt Whippet that I got from you quite some time ago and it is one of my many prized possessions

Yeah. Those Vita-Felts have a special feel to them. You'll see soon enough!

they are definitely different ... I now own 6 Vita Felt Stetsons and I can't really put my finger on what exactly it is that is special ... but there is indeed something special

It's all in the je ne sais quoi. Like Whippet.

Enjoy our chosen category. Unlike many collected things, virtually any hat is fair game. You can reach out and own it without having to remortgage the house.

Hmmm....did the buyer sober up snd realize it wasn't $67.70 he bid?

Interesting to see what it goes for this time.

Interesting. I think it jumped from the high $200s to $677 in the last seconds, so I don't think so. Also interesting that it wasn't given the "second chance" treatment for the next highest bidder.

Wonder what the back story is.
