Check out Burlington Coat Factory. I bought one of their $17 fur felt fedoras last fall and have packed it, rolled in my suitcase, on a couple of trips. It's taken it quite well. It has a cloth sweatbank which makes it easy to roll, and it pops back into shape nicely. Best of all, I'm not...
I've found that sizes tend to be reasonably accurate, though I agree that there is variation between manufacturers and that there is probably shrinkage over time. Generally, though, the marked size tends to correspond to circumference within what I would consider to be reasonable...
I was tempted to bid on that hat, but I decided (again--that makes 3 greens I've passed on) that green just isn't my color. Let us know how it is when you get it. Looks great in the pic.
I picked up a navy blue Beaver Brand from an antique store. I've no idea of the vintage, but the sweat band is marked with a store that no longer exists (nor have I ever heard of it in my 40 years in this area). It's very nearly mint.
Like Leo's, the sweat band is imitation leather...
Amish straw for summer
We have an area of Amish communities in southern MN. My wife and I were down there about 10 years ago and I picked up a new, sturdy straw hat with about a 3" brim for $6. Works, feels, and looks great for around the yard.
Cavanagh
I've got a couple of brown Cavanaghs in 7 1/4 LO. I'd love to add black, gray, or blue to the Cavanagh collection. Brim width 1 3/4" to 2" would be ideal. I have to keep putting my hats on the stretcher, so 7 3/8 LO or XLO would be great, too.
Fellow Minnesotan here, Eric. Nearly lifelong, in fact. If it's under 20F, the fedoras go on the shelf and something with ear flaps goes on the head. I've got a cheap imitation fur trooper hat I wear when it really gets cold. I have had some good results with 180 brand ear muffs--the kind that...
I've never been one for rules of etiquette--I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's when the only rules were to break the rules. During that period of time, my women friends were usually offended if we men tried to show them extra courtesies. They took it as condescending and demeaning...
Getting back to your original question, Mycroft, if I could only take one big band album with me to a desert island it would be Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall Concert. A 2 disc set, so plenty of great music. They did sort of a "history of jazz" during part of the concert, so there are many...
I inherited my grandfather's hat brush, vintage early 20th century. It was a complimetary item he gave away to customers of his insurance business. The bristles (horsehair seems a good guess) are 1 1/8" long and stiffer than a typical paint brush, but I've never had any trouble scratching the...
