Well even for me growing up in the 80's-90's with 9 siblings and one well being shared by 3 homes, we only got complete bath's once a week on Saturday. But, Mom made sure we scrubbed face, hands, arms and feet at least once a day. Not until we reached 12-13 were we allowed to bathe more often.
The Coconut and Castor you should be able to get at health food stores. Coconut is sometimes sold in the health/organic section of grocery stores, and the Castor will be in the body care section of health food stores.

My Mom gave me a bottle years ago, and I only recently went to look for more (I refused to wear perfume for ages!) and was devastated to realize it's been discontinued years ago. It was the BEST Vanilla scent ever!

I suppose it started out of habit. My Mom always wore skirts/dresses, stockings and heels when I was growing up. She always dressed us girls in skirts/dresses as well. I continued to dress nicely once I got older and came to appreciate what it represented. Guys my age don't seem to like it...
