    The Golden Era's *ugliest* clothes

:offtopic: Wow - Connie Willis is a family friend? Cool! A little star struck here. She's a major hero of mine! Mr. RC is friends with a few famous people and he always rolls his eyes at me and points out that everybody has to have friends/family - even the famous. But I always found that...

    end of the month food

Beans and corn pones. All you need for corn pones is corn meal, water and oil for frying. (Plus butter and salt after they come out of the pan - heaven!)

    Coffee/ Espresso/ other

Mr. RC uses Arabica beans and a cold brew contraption like this: http://www.toddycafe.com/ to make our coffee. I bet you could just use a recycled mason jar though and strain with some layers of cheesecloth. You grind the beans and pour cold water over the grounds, then let the whole thing steep...

The combined scents of coffee brewing and bacon frying when you first wake up and realize someone else is making breakfast for a change. lol Also pinion wood fires Crayons when you first open the box Interior wall paint (even though it gives me a headache after a few hours) Pumpkin...

    White After Labor Day

I guess it's living in Texas where seasons are kind of limited (other that hot) that makes me interested in seasonal dressing. By putting away whites and pastels in September and unpacking the darker browns, burgundies, forrest greens and grays to wear until March, it helps to create a sense of...

    What Games Amuse you

I've inherited my grandmothers gorgeous set of inlaid wood folding game tables, a year's worth of different specialized card game linens and cocktail napkins, and seemingly a million decks of cards. Now, if I just actually KNEW how to play bridge or had any buddies that did! lol

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

Greetings, all. I find that I just love "old stuff" - I'm not attached to any one special era. I haven't worn much in the way of vintage clothes since high school in the 80's, but I do treasure and wear my grandmother's jewelry and other accessories from the early 1900's - about the 1950's. And...

    Who Does Without TV?

Mr. RC & I have been quasi-homeless and tv-less since December. (Finally our own roof over our heads again this month - yay!) We do occasionally watch Hulu shoes and various programs from ITunes on my laptop. It's been fascinating to see what we actually watch now that we must either, A...

    Reviving Detroit

Very nice work, Joe. As a soon-to-be 1926 Tudor Cottage dweller myself, I hope you will continue posting updates here. There is much similar work ahead for me and I'm an absolute beginner in the care and feeding of historic houses.

Places to visit in San Francisco

Might be crazy with tourists this time of year, but I love Louis' Diner near the Sutro Baths. It's been there since 1937 and is very cozy after a walk on the beach. The food is very simple diner stuff, but the staff has always been very gracious - even when they're slammed.

    songs that make you shiver/cry

Another sucker here for "I'll follow you into the dark" by Death Cab. Gets me every time. Also Sam Cooke's recordings of "Blue Moon" and "A Change is Gonna Come". And "Misguided Angel" by the Cowboy Junkies too. Sigh.

    Children's books

Virginia Lee Burton's, "The Little House" still chokes me up a bit.
