Looks diff to me. Alan is great to work with so I would send him the pic and ask how come they are different?

see what his response is and then go from there....

Alan did a jacket for me and I'm with you, I love the fit!

Good luck even though I know you'll be fine.

how do I go about mentioning this to Alan without being insulting?

Do not think too much of it, wait until in a good mood after a nice cup of tea and simply call him and tell him. Everbody makes mistakes some day or another. Why not him? Maybe you. The only way to find out is to get together and try to find out what happened. I am sure he would appreciate to have been the first one to be talked to about your concerns before hundred others know about it.

Good luck!

Appreciate your input. Alan is indeed a wonderful human being, and it's always a pleasure speaking with him. I, in no way, intend this thread to dissuade people from choosing their shop for jacket making. They are fantastic, and I think their reputation will hold strong on this site no matter the conclusion we come to about this particular project.

You write for a living? I'm guessing you write technical stuff... Wouldn't you just email Alan with, "Hi Alan, it seems to me that the wrong leather was used when producing this jacket. These things happen. I'd appreciate an opportunity to discuss this with you further. I've sent you a photo for your own records. Best regards - "

I reckon I both write and teach for a living so I really have no choice, as I often have to communicate with other folks about very delicate issues, like grades. I agree it's a simple writing task, ultimately, but I just got nervous about offending someone I highly respect.

Turns out, all for naught—it was me who made the mistake, as I first suspected. I went back to my shed of a work space and discovered I'd pulled the strap leather from a different side I'd ordered around the same time. So Alan made no mistake whatsoever. I'm going to redact my original post, just so it doesn't look bad to any potential JL patrons.
