I usually deal in vintage housewares but it seems I am attracting menswear lately!
My recent find is a shawl collared tuxedo/dinner suit. I doubt it was made any earlier than 1960 due to the union label. Hope it is Ok to post about the suit here.
I have googled and cannot find anything about "Vanguard". Is it the name of the fabric blend?
How common is it that a Savile Row suit would be made with Fortrel polyester?

Well...as interesting as it is, it's not really a 'Savile Row' suit. I don't know the history of that label, but Savile Row suits are not made by Toronto factories or American factories for Toronto clothiers, or factories at all!

Savile Row, being only a street, and not any particular company*, has long been used by many companies to impart the idea of quality to their products. It happens a lot in Asia. Now, this isn't to say that the suit isn't decent quality, as a lot of suits from period undoubtedly are, but it's something else than what the label implies.

(*The Savile Row Association - or whatever it's name is - now protects the name).

On October 13th, 2011, GFI opened it's first GRXL store in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. GRXL is a division of George Richards Big and Tall and carries a collection of both Branded and Private label product for the big and tall consumer.

i thought it was just a street but then I found this website: http://savilerowco.com and thought maybe the suit originated with them. I have sent them an email asking if they could let me know if the label was one of theirs.

I sent them a Facebook message yesterday, no reply yet so will send them an email as well.

I am contemplating actually going in to the George Richards shop that is near me. Would probably get better results in person. :)

I received a reply from Savile Row Company in less than half an hour! I am impressed. What a nice fellow! :)

"Good Afternoon,

Unfortunately this shirt is not one of ours. We are 'The Savile Row Company' and our labels will have this present on this.
There are many tailors on Savile Row who use this name on their labels, unfortunately this particular suit is not affiliated with us.

I apologise that we cannot help you any further on this matter and we hope you identify it soon.

If I can assist you in any further way please do not hesitate to contact me."
