I have searched the forum for information on Bond hatter NY. Not much to be found, really. From the 5th Ave. adress and some pictures of hats I´ve seen on the web, I can infer, it must have been quite a good hat shop or manufacturer. They even did Cavanagh Edges!

Does anyone have more information on Bond?

Thank you, Bilyspew,

I also found a Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bond_Clothing_Stores#History

So, Bond was not a hatter, but a retailer. That meas, their hats were made as private lables by other manufacturers.

The one that is on the way, right now, does feature a Cavanagh Edge. Therefore, the original maker can be narrowed down to Hatco more or less.

I will compare it to my Cavanagh, Knox and Stetson Cav. Edge hats. Maybe, there is some evidence to be found. The lining imprint puts it somewhere in the Stetson area, I´d say. Here is the Ebay entry In case I find some "Made in Italy", it could also be a Borso in disguise, but, no, not really :)

Bond could be made by Hat Corp., but I have no information in my files to suggest it. The only store-branded hats that I know for certain Hat Corp. made are Saks Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers.

I'm sure Hat Corp. did a good business in branded hats, maybe not as well as Lee, or Stetson. It's hard to confirm that, though.

Brad - so Stetson did do store branded hats? Do you have any more info on this or anything you can point me at?

Sorry, should have said that I don't know that for a fact. I don't have any specific information, but as large as they were, I can't imagine them not doing them, when the second and third largest companies in the U.S. are. However, it's possible Hat Corp. and Lee did that because Stetson ignored that market.

Lee did that for sure. The Brent and Marathon of Montgomery Ward and JC Penney were just a few of the many private labels that Lee put out from their factory. In fact, I think Lee was the largest hat manufactuer when they were doing this. They really knew how to nail down the private label business. I think they had something like twenty different liners set up for private label hats alone.
Stetson likely did a few private labels but really nothing next to Lee.

Bond arrived and ...

The Bond with Cav. Edge arrived and I was quite suprised, when I had a look at it.

I had the feeling to already have handled something similar, before.

Here they are, and they are too similar:

1st picture: Cavanagh left, Bond right
2nd picture: Bond left, Cavanagh right

The body the hats is more or less identical in shape, dimensions and feel. The same is for the sweatband. Identical leather quality. The differences are little details. The Bond has a synthetic grosgrain ribbon, the Cavanagh a silken one.

The rest, you can see comparing the hats in the picture.

Conclusion: This particular Bond may well have been made by Hat Corporation.
