Tweed Overcoats

I'd be greatly appreciative if people can post pics of tweed overcoats they own. I have to relocate to the UK in June- perhaps permanently- and I'm gonna get myself a tweed overcoat for the winter. I've been looking at Walker and Slater coats- the House of Bruar used to do one that was reasonably priced, but it's no longer on their website.

Or should I go with a peacoat?

Depends on how you wish to wear it. For daytime use with a suit and a tie, you will need an overcoat. A tweed is a good choice as they are usually thick and warm. Same with Herringbone. There are a bunch of other weaves, such as Merino and Cashmere that are warm but not as windproof. For casual wear, both during the day and at night, the peacoat will be the best for warmth. At night, just add a sweater or a vest for more warmth.

I've been wearing herringbone overcoats for years, with every type of outfit, from jeans and work shirt (or even hoodie), to three-piece suit. Nothing else works as well for me when the weather warrants it.

Those are very different kinds of coats. The Walker Slater overcoats are very nice indeed, but I'd wear them with a suit or with nicer clothes, the kind you'd wear if you were going to a nice restaurant, etc. A peacoat's the kind of coat I'd wear instead of a leather jacket. If you'd like an overcoat for the pub or hanging with friends, there are plenty of great old ones on Etsy or Ebay that you can pick up for not a lot of money (one of my favorites is the Loden coat, particularly Schneider's). But ask some of our GB brothers here: like many other countries, you can wear some things in the bigger cities, particularly London, that you might not want to wear in some other parts.

Excellent advice, along with Peacoat's, whose ideas are very similar.

I'm going to have to second this suggestion, I also have a loden coat from Schneiders - it's an amazing material, though much less well known than tweed. I would actually argue that loden is a bit better in terms of it's physical properties, but it is a lot less diverse in terms of appearance (given that it goes through a felting process).

I've been living in London for years, and regularly wear overcoats in the cooler months, and I'll wear them in pretty much all circumstances (I tend to use the loden coat mainly when I'm doing things like going into the countryside), whether wool, cashmere of specifically tweed, any will work fine. You'll find it more or less impossible to go too formal with an overcoat here (the one possible exception being a proper evening overcoat with silk lapels).
