Something I could not wait to show you...

I know I'll be seeing some of you folks Tuesday in LA. But I couldn't wait to show you the brown Cavanagh I finally got back from the hatter today (they attached a new sweatband and ribbon for me, after I reblocked it with Fedora's size 7 block).

I had to take the photos myself as my wife is asleep. My apologies for not dressing up better...and the color is kind of wrong in these photos. It has a lot more red in it, more of a tobacco color.

Yes, that is a little hole in the crown. I don't care. Still my favorite hat. Thanks again to Fedora for his fantastic block!

That's one sweet hat. It's seems like a perfect blend vintage cool-meets Indy lid- meets Bogey's hat from Treasure of Sierra Madre. I like the little hole...it gives it a lot of character.

I really gotta try snaggin' a few of these vintage lids out there before they're gone!

If you're looking for vintage frames, you can find them in any antique mall. I wear a pair of 1936 gold filled wire frames that I purchased for $6 a couple of years ago. I see the ones havershaw wears all the time for anywhere of $10 to $35, depending on condition. Keep your eyes open. They're out there....Regards. Michaelson

What a great site. I have seen many of the gold wire rims around town at antique stores, but none like the rimless frames that Havershaw has. Much obliged.

Sorry for the delay. I was out of town.

Sadly, I lucked out on my frames. They are 1940s American Optical frames, and they were made for the coal miners in Pittsburgh in the early forties. They look like normal glasses but they're a lot heavier and more sturdy - supposedly they were safety glasses made for the miners. (All of this info comes from the elderly gentleman who filled my prescription. He recognized them instantly and marveled over the fact that "they still have the original red-top screws in them!" I don't know what that means, but the screws do have red tops!)

Anyway, I got them in a thrift store in Pittsburgh, for $1.00. I was wearing a pair of 50s frames at the time which were very similar, but as I have a hard time finding glasses which fit my thin face, I keep my eyes open for extra pairs. These were the nicest and sturdiest vintage frames - actually, of any era frames - I had ever encountered.

The next day, my 50s frames broke. Just sitting at a restaurant. They broke into three pieces. I was lucky I had just purchased the American Optical frames the day previous.

Anyway, while traveling in LA, I visited a vintage store called Iguana Vintage Clothing or something like that. It's on Ventura in Sherman Oaks. They had quite a few frames that were very similar to mine which I would have bought if I hadn't just bought a bunch of jackets and some saddle shoes for my wife. So you might want to head over there and see what they've got.

I thought that shuron site was pretty good too. I actually thought they had frames that were similar to mine, but I could be wrong. It's been a while since I checked that site out.
