For sale is a fabulous 1930s three-piece double-breasted suit, styled by Brandon. The fabric is a wonderful mid-to-heavyweight navy blue wool with alternating white and red pinstripes. The suit is in fantastic condition -- no noticeable flaws -- and I hate to part with it, but I'm moving and...
It's closer to dark brown than black (the horsehide facings in particular are much browner in person than in the photos -- and sorry for the upside-down nature of 'em!)
My move is your gain! Having relocated from the frigid climate of Minnesota to the decidedly warmer one of Washington, D.C., I've found my incredibly warm B-3 completely unnecessary. I've had it for about two years and it's been lightly worn (some scuff marks on the horsehide facings, but I...
Two things.
One, the insignia are probably post-war; WWII-era shoulderboards and collar tabs had piping based on the branch of service.
Two, WWII-era overcoats apparently did not have the lining extend to the, for want of a better term, right lapel (at least, that's what a Soviet reenactor...
It's probably from the 1970s or 1980s, but the cut and construction are essentially unchanged from WWII. I'd bid myself, if I didn't already have three! (And if it wasn't 70 degrees!)
I second Bache Gabrielsen (the VS and VSOP are somewhat more moderately priced).
Widely available in Minnesota -- one of the sales reps explained to me when they introduced it here that the company is expanding into heavily Scandinavian areas in North America, which so far means New York...
"German" chocolate cake is truly delicious, but it's actually named after American chocolatier Sam German, who developed a kind of sweet chocolate back in the 1850s.
It was originally called "German's Chocolate Cake" before we Americans do what we do best and simplified the name...
Yes, I was afraid of that, but A) there's always next year and B) it's convention season for me in the winter. Last year I was in Houston, the year before that San Diego and Washington -- and wool doesn't hold up well in those climes, even in winter!
With the heat of the summer fully upon us (and plenty more to come), I think it's time for me to get a linen suit!
I have a Ralph Lauren linen jacket that I wear all the time (despite it not fitting properly), and it's absolutely perfect for the hot summer months, but I'd like a matching...
A martini: 1 part Beefeater, 1 part Noilly, a dash of orange bitters, and a twist.
Not noteworthy otherwise but I'm drinking it out of my "new" cocktail glass(es) I picked up at the antiques store. I already broke one, but I've still got four left!
I wish I had a good story behind it, but I had a bottle of Noilly Prat and I read in an old cocktail book that they used to add orange bitters to the drink.
It's actually quite good. The citrus of the twist and the bitters is balanced quite nicely by the Prat.
I get weird looks (and occasionally snooty service) when I go into a bar and order the following:
3 parts Gin (never rail, rarely Gordon's, usually Beefeater, occasionally Tanqueray, and at home Plymouth or Old Tom)
1 part French vermouth (preferably Noilly Prat)
Stirred
Dash of...
So I found a series of AMAZING late 30s three piece double breasted suits for a steal at a local thrift store yesterday, and what's even more amazing is they fit... well, sorta.
The waist on the jackets are too high and the pants are a bit short - as it stands now, I look a bit bulky in them...
