Here are some pix of this hat. I hand-bashed it as some of you suggested, and it worked out pretty nicely, I think. I didn't use any steam and it holds the bash just fine. I am very happy with the hat--probably my favorite. You can click the thumbnails for a larger view if you like.

May I be the first to say congratulations? That looks like the original price tag on the sweatband, but the photo is washed out to the point that I can't read it. Is it? And what does it say?

very nice

Nicely presented. Is it a special designation, like
a Stetson 100 or some large number of Xes?

It appears to be stiff, like a Stetson 100?

A fine hat in a rare size!

On the Photobucket album view, check the little boxes by the images you want to post, then scroll to the bottom and click the button that says "Generate HTML and IMG code." On the page that comes up, copy the code that appears in the box labeled "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended."

Paste that code in your post, and it will create clickable thumbnails that point to the full-size images, like this:

Thank you, feltfan. It is a 3x, but it is very soft--it came open crown, and I hand-bashed it with no steam.

Great, thank you, Tony--I did it and it is now working! As I recall, you also gave us the method for using Google to search this forum, didn't you? Come clean now, are you really Bill Gates?

I can't imagine how many hats I'd have if I had his dough. lol

Oh, and if I did, the Queen Mary would be fully functional by now. ;)

Very nice hat. I think I bid on it. If is the same hat, I am curious why it reached such a high price. At the same time I purchased a 7.5 Stratoliner in excellent shape for half of the price.

I got no idea what Cruiser paid for it, but if it were anything less than, oh, two and half times what a new one costs, I'd say he did OK. It's a good-as-new hat that just happens to be 40 years old, which makes it better than new. I'm guessing it will still be in fine shape long after most of us aren't.

It went for $255, which is a lot. It was quite a bit less than the max bid I entered, so I am glad to have gotten it for less than my maximum. I can't say what motivated the other bidders, but in my case the motivations were: (1) the hat was obviously NOS and pristine, still had cellophane covering the open crown; (2) obviously wasn't the stiff crown newer ORs have; (3) rare size, long oval fits me well, and it was one size larger than I usually wear--since the hat was so old, I thought there was a chance it had shrunk slightly. Turns out it had, so it fits me like it was made for me. You can't buy hats like this one new any more. I have only been watching the prices for a few months, but it appears good ORs and good Borsalinos in large sizes get this high or higher. The highest I have seen the last two nice Stratoliners go for in my size was around $150 (I bought one of those).

Just as another point of reference...

Thank you. Mine went for less than this one, which I also bid on, and perhaps you did too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320003843667. Given the price this one went for, I was glad to get mine, which I like better, for less.

I think I paid $125 for my Stratoliner. It is very, very nice, although not as pristine as one I purchased (in a green or khaki) last year, for around $275. One reason
I asked about the price is that I have felt guilty about
paying so much for a hat and now I can feel much better.
Thanks again.
