After wearing this lid for only a few hours, it is easily becoming one of my favorites. The felt is a beautiful medium weight, so there is a real feeling of sturdiness. At the same time the finish is incredibly soft and smooth. Open crown is a tad over 5 1/2", and the brim is a generous 2 7/8". Fits like a dream and, after a cleaning at Optimo, is in absolutely pristine condition. Freshly bashed this morning... :)

RBH is right- great crease-and fabulous hat-1 question: "Clear Beaver"? what's the meaning of this term?

Thanks, ideaguy. You may want to check out this
thread, although things might not be exactly "clear" after you read it. [huh] My own belief is that "clear beaver" signifies pure, undyed beaver felt.

C'mon now, Duck. It's easy -- you just have to listen carefully, and the hat will tell you exactly how it wants to be shaped. Of course, it helps to be a "Hat Whisperer." :D

Looks great, Jimmy.

Is this the OR you were going to use to show us your c-crown creasing technique? :)

Thanks, Alan. I didn't want to have to stop and take pics while creasing this one, so I'll be using a different lid for the tutorial. ;) I have started to do some drafting, however... :)

Vintage 7x stetsons have the absolute best felt. I prefer them to just about anything, even my stetson 100. They're just so shape-able and durable, with the perfect weight to them.

I know what you mean, D-man. In my more limited experience, I must say that it is hard to imagine a nicer felt. The weight is just perfect, and the hat has a feeling of being durable, but soft, smooth and supple at the same time. From what I have gathered here on the Lounge, my Stetson 100 is one of the relatively stiffer ones, though it has beautiful felt. Still, I prefer the 7X, as well.

Does anyone know when Stetson stopped making the 7X Clear Beaver Quality?

Bringing this thread back to Pg. 1.

Shudde Bros Stetson 7X Clear Beaver Open Road
2-3/4 X 5-1/2" open crown. The felt is what I would call medium stiff, good for a Cattleman crease but definitely not as stiff as a modern 6X OR. The hand feel of the felt is soft & smooth but not as plush as my "100" (contrary to other opinions).

Not the best pics I have ever taken, & I notice a water stain that doesn't show up otherwise. I'll see if I can steam clean that out.
