A Highwayman in the highlands

My highwayman returned to Scotland for a few days last month, to the west coast and the islands of Mull and Skye.

The jacket is about two years old and starting to feel nicely broken in, it is made from cordovan FQHH, here are a few pictures of it in it's natural environment:

AERO cordovan is really incredibly - do you have close ups from the hide?

Great pictures. The background looks a bit like Appalachia in E Tennessee where I was reared.

There's a good reason for that: Scotland used to be part of the Applachian range, but some time back - just before lunch, I believe - our bit of the range snapped off and headed north-east until it realised it was getting damn cold, and stopped

Didn't think about plate tectonics when I posted but believe you are quite correct with your statement regarding the literal previous connection between Scotland and Appalachia a few million years ago.

When we went to North Carolina a few years ago, we went up the Blue Ridge Parkway, climbed to the top of a mountain, looked around and said "This all looks awfully familiar..."

Nice to see it back in its natural habitat. You have eerily appropriate shirts to complete the look as well.Just remembered I think you had long sleeves when new. They look perfect now. Either they shrunk a good inch or more or you had the scissors out.

Although I have never visited Scotland, I have been told that there are dramatic similarities between SE Tennessee, the area wher I grew up, and parts of Scotland. Not wanting to hijack this thread, I will show a couple of photos of my traveling jacket, a G&B Expedition (Indy), while I was visiting my old homestead late last September. First of all, a photo taken from where I went to school for six years on a bluff at the foot of Signal Mountain overlooking the Tennessee River with Lookout Mountain seen in the background.

From this point one can see seven states.


Like much of Scotland was a battleground, this area was too during the US Civil War. This picture was taken on the side of Missionary Ridge, only a couple of miles from my old homestead.

Maybe the biggest difference is temperature. After separating from N America, Scotland stopped moving south shortly after it ricocheted off the North Pole.

Oh for a few of hundred miles more south, just a bit closer to Italy's latitude...

I don't have any close ups of the hide but I will try and take some if I get a chance in the next few days, will post them on this thread.

Incidentally the restaurant was called the Boathouse if I remember correctly, it was on the shore of Loch Ness, the monster was just out of shot.

I didn't think about the shirts when I packed, my wife quickly picked up on it though, asking what clan I was pretending to represent, I don't think that Ralph Lauren have a clan tartan. The sleeves of the highwayman have ridden up nicely, no alterations have been made. Though if I am being hyper-critical I still think that the jacket is a little too large across the shoulders but I am happy with it.

When the jacket was brand new I deliberately wore it with an old white shirt to see if it would bleed and a tiny amount of colour rubbed off on the collar of the shirt, this washed out with no difficulty. Apart from this there has been no evidence of bleeding since.

Several thousand years of dreich conditions have played their part in sculpting the landscape, if you had warmer drier conditions then I imagine that you would have a very different looking country.
