A question for all...

BellyTank

I'll Lock Up
As I said, a question for as many as are interested to answer-
..In a world where you could buy just exactly what you wanted without the need to accept polyester, low waists, laminated breathable layers, ugly collars, etc.,
what would your ideal Golden Era adventure clothing wardrobe consist of???
Taking into consideration the overlap on this forum of Jones-ing and Vintage-ing,
what would your necessities be for shirts, trou and outerwear and headwear, not forgetting that a true adventurer could be headed to deepest Central America, North Africa, navigating the Matterhorn or Norway's Fjords or delving deep inland by biplane or motorcycle-

- tropical- desert- temperate- alpine and arctic clothing-

Fabrics?- we're doing '30s-'40s. Wools, tweeds, whipcord, corduroy gabardine, poplins, drills, leather- sturdy stuff up to the rigours of it all...

Well, what do you say- what do you need to take along???
Go on- go crazy... just imagine I'm paying(and imagine that I have money...).

I thank you for humouring me-

-BellyTank.

Some additional fabrics to consider:

Amongst the tweeds, include the Donegal and the Thornproof

The Donegal is reknown for its 'fliers' small coloured specks spun in with the yarn

The true 'thornproof' is a highly twisted woolen yarn that has a very tightly constructed weave. Particularly usefull as a riding jacket when riding through and jumping the hedges.

Amongst the raised twills add the Cavalry and the Covert to the Whipcord for 30's and 40's wear.

To the cottons, besides poplin, drill etc add the cotton canvas or duck again tighly woven for rugged wear. Any of the cottons may be lined with a brushed cotton for colder climes.

Yep!

Yep, I know my fabrics- been in the industry for most of my working life.
I was being brief there- good additions thanks.

Moleskin, denim, chambray...

But garments, styles, beating the weather- snow, wind, searing heat...

Thanks,
BT.

20 sea chests, 2 Camels, 1 donkey and 12 porters required...

Man oh man that's a lot of gear- I was really talking action gear, not evening wear- but that's quite enlightening actually.
But if it was for pure adventuring, out in the dust, sand, snow mountains-
-what would you be wearing?
That's what I'm getting at- not what you'd have back at the hotel(s)...

Travel light- prepared to fight!

Come on people, help me out here...

This isn't just a time killer, I have my reasons for asking-

OK, put it this way- if you were an international adventurer in the 1930s/40s-
what would your apparel choices be in the categories listed below?
What you would ideally want, not what's currently commercially available-
Use your imagination- think The English Patient- I. Jones, 7 Years in Tibet, The African Queen....that's just for starters.

Desert/tropic

Jacket?
Hat?
Other?

dressing for the Desert

For the desert/tropic, I say you read up on an actual 1930's adventurer of the time: Frank Buck. His book "Bring 'Em Back Alive" should help.
A pith helmet and khaki shirt with epaulets are always the right look.
I prefer dressing for dessert. Charlotte Rousse, anyone?

A few good white hankerchiefs would be good for a million different uses. My friend says a gentle always has two things:a pocket knife and a hankerchief. Good guidelines wherever you are. I also recomend for all climates a bomber jacket with a removalble liner or liners, lines of diffent weights too, depending on the weaher.

Hmmm, not sure about the tropical/desert category. I have no experience of that, but i'll have a think. I have some experience of the alpine/temperate, though. Here goes:

Temperate/Alpine

Trousers? 1 pair each Donegal and Harris tweed plus fours; 1 pair long trousers in each fabric

Shirt? Heavy cotton shirts w/ four large pockets.

Jacket? Donegal or Harris tweed un-belted Norfolk jacket, custom built w/ four front buttoned large map pockets

Hat? Flat cap (8 panel newsboy) w/ fur-lined ear flaps for when it gets cold atop the Matterhorn ;)

Other? Heavy scarf a must, hiking boots, long heavy woolen socks, soft woolen underwear, large leather backpack, water bottle, hip flask filled w/ whiskey, brandy or rum, rope & all necessary climbing gear, gloves, compass, large knife, small knife, notebook & pencil/pen, maps, sunglasses

There will surely be stuff i've missed but for travelling light, i think i've got most of it. All this list would fit inside the backpack, or strapped to the side of the backpack (ropes, ice axe etc.). Weight should be no more then 15-20 kilos.
