1/3 - The Luxe Experience
The first in a three-part series sweeps you back to the escapism of inter-war fashion and design with apt archive, incisive soundbites and arch narration (from Hermione Norris). Artists and architects rebuilt a world that was broken, but also where technology was changing at astonishing speed. Central to it all was Art Deco or Moderne, which was thrust into the limelight by the 1925 International Exposition in Paris. This "naughty and transgressive" movement was tentatively introduced to Britain but enthusiastically embraced by America - specifically Hollywood. The well-chosen newsreel induces a variety of emotions, from the hilarity of real-life Cholmondley-Warnerisms ("A woman today demands prectical things that are attrective as well") to the shock of seeing the poisonous doctrine of the Eugenics Society.
