Cavanagh Bows

Here's a mystery that has been haunting me.
Most of the Cavanagh hats I have owned or seen
on eBay have torn bows. The bow is usually fairly
simple (compared to some hat companies) and the
bow is always frayed straight down the back loop.

I once gave an eBay seller a hard time about this
because she sold me a "perfect" hat with a frayed
bow. Now I am beginning to wonder if Cavanagh sold
them that way. It seems hard to believe, but I've
never seen frayed bows like that on any other hat
manufacturer's hat band.

What's your mileage on this?

The frayed or 'feathered' back bow is actually a style. My '30s Knox has it. The disadvantage, of course, is that if not properly taken care of, the feathering will increase until it looks frayed.

Amazing!!! My Cavanagh has a frayed bow, and while I was puzzled because the rest of the hat was in pretty good condition, I assumed it was just worn out.

It is on the hat I sent to Optimo. I wonder what they'll say about it. I am sure I will want it replaced. Original style or not, it is not appropriate for me today.

I believe it is characteristic of the maker. My 3 Cav's all have the same ribbon/bow.

Frayed was the style, you see on alot of English hats, particularly bowlers and Hombugs.

Stingy Homburg

All 3 of my Cavs have the frayed bow as well, including a neat little stingy (1 3/4") brim black homburg.
