Here are pics of my first DIY project, what I call the "practice hat" . It is a Hatco that came to me from OFAS in an 8x8x8 box. I rebashed it, replaced the sweatband and the ribbon and gave the lining a good washing.

Here are pics of the "game hat". It is a Shudde Bros. custom I think because there were no other name brand markings anywhere. It had a cattlemans bash and a 3 inch brim. I replaced the sweatband, the lining, the ribbon, reblocked it with my hat retainer to get the taper out of the crown ( not a recommended method but it was all I had) and gave it a good scrubbing with an orange sponge.

You need to do a tutorial on step by step sweatband replacement. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Absolutely... I can only look on in awe and wonder at the casual 'I replaced the sweatband, the lining, the ribbon, reblocked it' and envy someone who obviously has a knack for doing this.

My only tip for you warmentrout: keep doing what you're doing!

I had a lot of difficulty with the first one and my solution , I think, was not the "correct" method. First I fit the sweat band to my head and duct taped it together at the right size. Then I cut it and put the ferrule in and sewed it together. I used one of those roller things that punches holes in stuff so my stitches would be sort of even, I don't have a sewing machine and wouldn't know how to even turn one on. Then I steamed and stretched the hat so it fit the sweatband properly. I had a lot of difficulty sewing in the sweatband. I could not get the sweat in the right place with it turned inside out. So, I placed the sweat in the hat where I wanted it and sewed it in from "the front". I made my stitches between the reed and the leather about a half inch apart all the way around the hat. The result is the stitches are a little lower when viewed from the outside of the hat but still high enough to be covered by the ribbon and the reed is snug against the felt so that you cannot pull it away from the felt ever so slightly like on a hat done by someone who knows what they are doing. My question, because I would like to learn how to do this the right way, is how do you get the sweat to stay where you want it with it turned inside out so you can sew through the fabric on the back of the sweat instead of the way I did it?

I am waiting on a pair of Cavanaughs I won on OFAS and if they need major work, which they may based on the single picture, I would like to be able to to it correctly. So, tips and suggestions are still solicited. And by the way, the suggestions and advice and pics that I found here were EXTREMELY helpful. Thanks to everyone.

thats a nice job!

I put basting stitches on the reeded part ... but I also had difficulty stitching it on so I took the lazy way out & went straight through the leather in the second row of stitching using the holes already there skipping one as I worked around the rim

Link to one of my projects I did 4 and documented them on here, if you're interested.

I got this new tool called a sewing awl that'll make projects like this easier.. I highly recommend one if you are going to make this a hobby like I did.

I got this one and I need to pickup some fine & extra fine needles for it... will probably need to get the finer thread on a spool to fit the needles also ... I'll call them about it this weekend

Have you tried using straight pins to hold the sweat in place? [huh]

Yes I did and I couldn't get it to go where I wanted. One side would be up too high and the other down too low. I'm thinking of maybe tacking it in place the way I did, then turning it inside out and sewing it in.
