Do any Loungers have a regular poker game with friends?

I am curious if any of my fellow Loungers are members of a regular poker group or card club? I am not talking about the casino card rooms but a game played regularly in someones home between a group of friends.

It has been several years since I was a member of such here in the states, while deployed we always play a lot of cards, games such as Spades/Hearts, Bid whist and poker are a normal part of life.

5-6 years ago I played cards once a month with 5 of my buddies. We would get together on a saturday night at one of our homes, it revolved and it was cigars, whisky and cards for 4-5 hours. Nothing grand, just nickle poker and such. I think our biggest pots were 5 bucks but it was a lot of fun. It was even better if there was a big boxing match or major college football game on at the same time.

This used to be a regular tradition for a lot of people, my grandparents had a bridge and pinochle game with friends once a month for several decades.

How about the rest of you?

Does me responding by simply answering your question in the negative seem kinda uselesss?

Instead, I said no by typing these two entire lines.

BTW, I suck at Poker just because...

My mother taught me to play five-card-draw when I was six -- she used to have her friends over every Friday night to sit around the table and smoke and play penny-ante, and occasionally I'd sit in. (I wasn't allowed to smoke, though.) Nowadays, none of my friends know anything about poker other than that it's that casino stuff they show on cable TV when there's no ball game on. We've reached a pretty sad state when *card playing* is a spectator sport.

We 'say' we play once a month but it ends up being once every other month. Now that there are wives and children and jobs and soccer teams to be coached, etc. To get us all in the same room is about as easy as herding cats.

I used to play poker in college with a bunch of fraternity brothers every Friday night. I was lousy at it and usually lost money. We had this one guy who was really lousy that cost other players, particularly me, a good amount of money. He would stay in a pot way too long with terrible cards. If you had a rotten hand, there was no problem. You just folded and saved money. If you had what you thought was a half way decent hand, you had to stay in also to see it through. The longer you had to stay in, the bigger your losses. It wasn't fun anymore.

I've been trying to organize a regular poker game twice a month for the last few weeks. I can't seem to get anyone on board, which seems strange to me because the guys I'm inviting aren't married and only one of them has kids. [huh]

There will be a $5 buy in for poker games. We're planning on playing Texas Hold 'Em, Five Card Draw, Chicago, Blackjack and Gin Rummy (no money) to start, and eventually moving to cribbage and possibly bridge.

Anyone have any pointers or tips to make the night succesful?

At my last job, some of my colleagues and I had a semi-regular poker night. Unhealthy food, smelly cigars, plenty of liqour, penny-ante stakes and a lot of foul language. In short, male bonding at its best. I miss the camaraderie. Indeed, some of the finest nights of my life not spent with my wife. ;)

No card games. When I visit my mom, we settle for a game of dominoes. At least once a month, my brother, a couple of friends and I get together for a game of tabletop wargaming, involving the use of pewter minatures and complex rules. We drive the womenfolk out of the house as they leave us "nerds" to our game. The games consists of loads of beer and intermission for pizza.:p

We always had plenty of cold beer, some scotch and Jack Daniels, good cigars, chips pretzels peanuts pizza etc. and either a fight or a ball game on the tv in the background. During football season we would usually fire up the grill and do steaks with all the trimmings. It made for some great evenings. Especially during rivalry week for football, there were some ugly namecalling sessions then.lol
