Does anyone still wear this summer work straw?

Are they machine made? Thery would have to be at that price. The crown is very high but I suppose that it gives the ventilation necessary in a yard hat. I find my Panamas get pretty hot and sweaty and I have thought of putting a couple of cleats in my cheaper one.

This from the website for the hat I recieved:
Natural -2 3/4” Brim
Locally Made
Size S is 21 1/4" or Hat size 6 3/4 - 6 7/8
Size M is 22" or Hat size 7 - 7 1/8
Size L is 23" or Hat size 7 1/4 - 7 3/8
Size XL is 23 3/4" or Hat size 7 1/2

Cookie, I just recieved this from The Kidron store. I sent them a note saying how much I liked the hat and how I had told 'friends' about it. This is what I recieved from them.

Thank you for your kind words. Our hats are made by a local Amish family & are worn by many in our community. Although the Amish mainly wear the plain straw hat, the fancier ones are just as well made and received.
Thank you also for your "spreading the word" about our hats. We hope it will bear fruit.
Sincerely,
Kidron Town & Country Store

So it would seem they are made by the Amish, but that is not to say that they dont use some fairly modern machinery to make them. But just like it is with 'our' hatters, its feels good to support a family bussiness.

After wearing my vented straw in our near 70 degree weather the last couple of days, I have to say I really like the hat.
So... I decided to go ahead and order this one also.

I will post what I think when I try it out.

Amish Yard hats

Anyone think that at that price and with that quality they could be turned into something more interesting with a good blocking? Please advise all summer hat maniacs.

I favor this type of hat in the summer. The FBI look of the 1930's.

I really have no idea Cookie. But I would think that you could remove the sweat and hat band, and soak the straw in water till it was pliable. Then I would think you could put whatever shape to it you would want.
Please bare in mind I have never done this with this type straw.

My new Amish straw arrived. I really like it. The crown has a pinch on it that I think looks good.
Overall if you are looking for a straw to knock around in you cant beat these two.

Cookie, I reworked this one, it seemed to do OK. I soaked the straw {the crown}in water, and put it on to put in the shape I was looking for.
I really like it better after I lowered the crown some and widened the c-crown.
Hope you can see the difference in the photo.
This is really a good roundabout straw for the money.

I gotta say I these hats a lot. No way would I wear my panama hat to do yardwork, they cost too much to do that. But I also don't like those big brimmed straw hats, reminds me of something my Grandma would wear while she tottered about in the garden. This seems to be the perfect compromise.

Welcome to the Lounge, Celicaboy1981 !
You are right, this is not a 'fancy' straw. BUT it is a good -work- run around - odd job- type straw. And I will say it is also a pretty nice straw to just wear. By no means is it a fine panama, but sometimes you just need a good average run around town hat. THIS ONE FITS THE BILL !
I dont think you would go worng if you got you one.

P.S. if any of you do get you a straw of this type, please post us a picture!

Welp RBH, your two look fine and I knew I was going to cave to the raves sooner or later -- but I've fretted and stewed over which one of these straws to buy long enough now! [huh]

So, I just now threw caution to the winds, did an eenie-meenie, and ordered the high-end $14.98 Men’s Fancy Vented! I mean, that style does seem more apropos for a swave aristocrat-type Californian such as I... Right?! :D

<a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/535/gardening11nr5.jpg" border="0" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" /></a>

Now ah'm sittin' back -- living large and waiting. Sure hope that the little family finishes that cornfield soon and heads on over to the haystack to select the material for my new "cow's breakfast" hat!! :)

Way to go JB!!!
I believe you will like this straw when you get it in.
Who knows, you may start a straw hat trend there in Ol' Californie.:D
Hope you will let us see it on yer noggin' !

Rusty, Thanks for posting a link to this thread. Although the Kidron Country Store does not show a straw with the visor insert in the front brim, I believe I'll order one of their vented styles. Who knows, maybe the visor brim will make a comeback.

Stutzsmans headwear has a visor straw fedora with a 3 1\2 inch brim... that just too wide for me. The price is $8.95 before shipping.
Their # is 812-875-8787 and they have no web presence.
