Gentlemen, I need your help

My boyfriend is just getting into vintage, and while I'm a 50's girls at heart, he is much more Golden Era material. I really want to surprise him with a "Beginner Wardrobe", but I'm not sure where to start. I've read through a ton of posts here in the Lounge, but I was wondering about advice on brands, materials, and the must haves (both clothing and accessories). Also, when buying second hand, what should I look for to make sure I'm not buying crap. I'd hate to buy a suit that falls apart after 2 wearings.

Any advice you gentlemen can give would be wonderful.
