I have a ten year old hat whose ling never would behave. I finally just tore it out (it was glued in). Made me start thinking what function it might serve. Can anyone tell me?

Then there is the aesthetic quality.

I have always regarded their primary purpose as "aesthetic". There are some practical purposes, but they have not played huge roles in the linings of my hats.

Most hats just look more classy with a lining to me.

Just last night I removed the lining from my Akubra Fed IV. I want to hang on to it, since the logo is beautiful. In the hat, however, the lining started to sag down from the top (the glue on the top had come loose) and just made the hat hotter. In Texas, hotter is not necessarily what you're looking for.
