Well now that it reached 94 degrees yesterday here in NJ and I've broken out some of my summer shorts I was wondering what type of hat is proper to wear with shorts?
Either kahki, cargo, or jean shorts?
I've never been a fan of straw hats but have been looking at them recently.
What's everyones opinions on hats with shorts?

Hot and humid

Its hot and humid here in Arkansas, I wear shorts and I wear hats. I think a straw fedora is a natural with a nice pair of shorts.
I just ordered this hat from Miller {The Logan, bleached}

It should arrive here today, if the weather is right [ we should have thunder storms today] I will try for some photos wearing it.

Definitely a straw...

Anything over 85 degrees I'm going straw, and my preference is for one with a more open weave so it breathes better. Wider brim if it's sunny -- 2 3/4" to 3" -- a bit narrower if it's evening. That said, I will sometimes opt for my Tilley, which is ventilated.

A bit expensive? Anyone know anything about this hat?

When the sun is beating down and the temperature is high, straw hats are a godsend. :)
I am in the market for a new straw and have been reviewing my options. I see no problem with headwear and shorts.

I don't consider true Panamas to be straw hats. The palm fibers are much different in texture and suppleness and a good hand woven hat can look as classy as a felt hat.

Or it can be very casual:

This is a good hat to wear with shorts. It has a fabric band instead of a grosgrain ribbon, making it a bit more casual.

Panamas are very versatile and will easily go with shorts and a casual shirt or a suit and tie (if you must insist on wearing a tie when it's 90 degrees). A loose weave or a ventilated crown like Weegee posted will keep you somewhat cooler, but just keeping the sun off your noggin does a world of good.

I recently purchase a purchased a Stetson panama, it works well in the heat with jeans shorts or khakis. I was surprised at how cool it kept me. just my two cents.

weegee....

hopefully you are old enough to remember the original "Kolchak; the Nighstalker" series starring darren mcgavin. this was his signature hat. the series started in las vegas and ended up in chicago; the hat travelled with him to the colder climate.

I wore my Panama yesterday with a guayabera and cargo shorts while I cleaned up my roof deck after our big cook out.

Here's the hat:

And I have worn felt in the summer as well. Here I am in El Yunque:

You end up looking a bit like Higgins from "Magnum,P.I."
