The first regarding the condition of a hat. Is the discoloration or loss of felt in the upper right an issue? The seller is saying that it is flaking from the piping. Is that a big issue? What shape would you consider the hat in? Also any guesses on the age or year of make for the hat? My research would indicate pre 1940s.

I don't see the discoloration or damage you're talking about, and I have no idea what the seller means by flaking piping. From what we can see, the hat looks to be in really good condition. The fact that it has a clear tip protector in the liner means that it's late-1950s into the '60s. I don't see anything else in the photos to contradict that. Looks like you got a winner!

When I looked at this hat on Etsy, I noticed the "flaky" look to the sweat. It looked to me like you'd need to pay for a new sweat first thing, unless it was a perfect fit, and it would not have been for me.
It also looked like the brim needed to be reshaped, but that's just me.
I can't see any color problem and if it is as nice as the Knoxes I have collected, it will be worth the investment and can be salvaged into a good daily wear hat.
I've had a lot of Knoxes and still have two in daily wear and they are great!
