To my knowledge, they weren't - and pin-up art being painted on them was even less rare ......
But I think, as long as any patches adds something unique to the jacket, is historically correct and looks the part and is well done, why not?
I have an extra leather patch that was an extra that I'd had made for my ANJ-3 jacket made by Roberto Bandecca in Italy and it's a total winner - super design and colours -and it looks really nice when placed on the shoulder ...
