The subject's already been touched upon several times, i.e. that old sweatbands are subject to ..cracking..tearing..desintegrating.
Recently, I sent my Stetson 100 to Optimo Hats, who strongly recommended that the sweat band be replaced by a new one (the original old one looked perfectly in order, but had to be stretched 2 sizes).
In spite of somewhat losing the "historical" aspect of my hat, I followed their recommendation.
I now agree in full with Optimo.
My "Real Nutria fur" wonderful cowboy hat,
the sweatband looked perfect, I wore it a few times, and it's tearing like so much wet paper along the stitches of the reed. Lexol made it ...worse.
My (I guess) 1970's Open Road style Stetson 20
Same story: dark sweatband looked solid, but it just tore along the seam; I must have worn the hat 20 times...
They's all going to Optimo.
