picked up a Schott 641HH cafe racer in horsehide

Well, thanks to all of the info you guys posted in my "horsehide jacket - how long to break-in" thread here:

I decided to go for it! I knew what I wanted, a cafe racer with band collar in black, but wasn't decided on the leather. The Schott 641 seemed to fit the bill, and after I tried on a 641HH in horsehide at a local leather shop, I knew that was the one to get. I normally take a 40R in most jackets and sportcoats, so I tried on a 42R as Schott suggested and it fit great, and I got an excellent deal on it! I was just wearing a plain t-shirt, so I have enough room for a heavy flannel shirt under it when it gets colder.

The 641HH has a non-removable quilted liner, but I didn't find the liner very heavy. I wore the jacket a little this evening and the temperature was around 62-64F and I was comfortable (well, aside from the un-broken-in jacket). I measured the leather thickness on the exposed inside bottom seam of the jacket when I got home and it is 3-3.5oz just as Schott claims. Schott also states they no longer use the fused interfacing glued to the horsehide, and I checked the jacket and from what I can tell there is nothing between the quilted lining and the bare horsehide. I was glad about that.

The horsehide is definitely shiny, but not as stiff as I was lead to believe in the other thread. I have some older leather jackets that are very soft, and the horsehide was nowhere near that soft, but it wasn't like wearing shoe sole leather. The jacket will kind of stand up on its own. I wore it for about 40 minutes and didn't notice any starts of creasing in the elbow area, so I am guessing it is going to take some time to break it in.

Here are a few pics. That is my wife wearing the jacket because quite honestly, she takes horrible photos so I figured it was just easier to have her wear it and me take the photos. She's just a little shorter than me, with shorter arms and torso, so the jacket fits me much better than her.






I know there has been some discussions regarding Schott horsehide here on the Lounge, but I think the jacket looks great. Plus I didn't have to wait for it, I got to try it on before buying it, and I did get a deal on it.

Schott makes quality jackets. Looks like you found the best way to fit a jacket, actually trying on before buying. We need to see how it fits on you though. You will have to give her some picture taking training.

I have a Schott 689H and its a great jacket. Very well-made and heavy duty. The grain is really starting to develop with some nice creasing in the sleeves. Congratulations on your purchase and good luck with your new jacket.

lol Alright, alright. I'll attempt some tripod and timer photos in the next few days (I have to find the tripod first). I probably won't have a chance until Friday at the earliest.

EDIT: Oh, those pics weren't really for fit, they were just to show the look of the leather when right off the rack.

They do develop a nice patina, here is one sleeve after a few years of wear.

I wish I could but extreme weather prevents. It's either too hot or too cold. I get about 2-3 months of wear each year.

Brand new Schott HH may look somewhat vinyl-ish, but it gets incredibly beautiful after only a few months of wear.

Yeah that vinyl ish finish is off putting at first but slowly gets better as the jacket get worn.

I know this is an old thread, but would it be possible to post some pictures of the 641 HH. Very interested in how it looks now. There's been much controversy over Schotts HH with the thickness and the fusing etc. I am thinking about the NEW 613SH as a possible purchase. Thanks...........

I wasn't aware of this new jacket. Do you know what the differences with a 618HH are? Is it the standard horsehide that Schott uses?

The 618HH says horsehide leather while the 613SH says heavyweight 3-3.5 OZ hand cut horsehide leather.

I see, so probably a heavier hide than the one used in their perfecto.

I believe the SH refers to slim horse. Spoke to Shott today...the 613sh is slim indeed.

So the hide wouldn't differ from their other horse offering? The slimmer, slightly longer cut is certainly more appealing to me.

I thought at one point I did post pics. I'll have to see if I have any on the laptop I have with me. I am currently traveling for work, and the jacket is about 6000 miles away. LOL. I picked up a brown Schott 141 in the fall in a size 38 and I have been wearing it pretty much constantly since I got it. It's been on three continents now and is well-broken-in. While I love everything about the 641HH, I sadly should have bought it a size smaller.

I bought my 141 at Legendary USA in Exton, PA. They had them in stock, and I was flying out of the country in about three days, so I drove down (about 2 hours), tried it on, and bought it. I was wearing the 641HH, and I thought the owner was going to make me a trade-in offer because the jacket is in excellent condition and nicely broken-in. I told him it makes a good winter jacket because I can wear a thick sweater under it. If you're near Legendary, I recommend a trip over. Excellent to deal with, and a lot of Schott jackets in stock.

Hey Andy...6000 miles away!! Glad you have your 141 with you. The reason for the pics was to see how the horsehide was breaking in so far. I could see from the orig. pics that it was a couple sizes too big. So in that case you prob didn't wear it that much in which case it's not broken in. Listing it in TFL classified would be a good idea. Anyhow if you got pics of the horse putum up... You in the 141 too!! It's all good!!
