I don't know what your handicraft abilities are. I engraved a glass-beer mug with a dremel tool with the number of years the person had in a laurel wreath and some personal words.

I also made caps for some very special people - quite a challenge, depending on the kind of cap one makes and involving sewing skills (something head-protecting for the outdoors-acivities would be suitable perhaps).

Sewing leather products (key fobs, a key bag) or knitting something (although I can't knit - can you?) could be nice as well.

Perhaps a personalised flask for the outdoor-activities could do the job?
