I know it's kind of sappy but "Mr. Bojangles" by Nitty Gritty Band always makes me kind of melancholy.

s'ok - pretty much everyone's choices here are heavy on the sap factor.

"Shivers" - Either the original Nick Cave/Boys Next Door version or the nearly impossible to find Marie Hoy version.

Moonlight Serenade will always give me shivers... Some times I can't listen to it without shedding a tear.

Most of the songs sang by Ray Eberle wile with Glenn's band have the same effect on me... mostly the Chesterfield broadcasts... when the opening theme comes on and I hear the applause... and I'm driving down an old road at night by my self... shivers and tears are soon to fallow.

I was born too late.

oh my. So many. Here are some:

Lush Life sung by Nat King Cole
One (the U2 song) sung by Johnny Cash
Mexico by Cake
Joey by Concrete Blonde (especially live)
I Will Not Take These Things for Granted by Toad the Wet Sprocket
Troy by Sinead O'Conner
Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straights (but I really love the Indigo Girls version too)

And the biggest weeper of all for me: Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, when sung by Jeff Buckley especially, but all versions make me cry.

"The Last Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley gets me everytime.I hate that it was used so prominently in that piece of drek Vanilla Sky.

Duke Ellington recorded a heartbreaking rendition of "Solitude" in 1941; just him and his piano. Always does it for me.

"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" - Judy Garland's WofOz version. My late mum liked that song. It reminds me of her.

Ok, I know it's not a classic, but I almost always tear up when I hear this song:

Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks:

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I get along.

Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have gone.

Goodbye, Michelle, my little one.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the bird are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfish on the beach

My Child by Plumb - It isn't sad at all, it is written for her children and when I hear it it makes my heart squeeze because I love my own kids so much.

Lullaby by Dixie Chicks

Dancing Queen by ABBA - This was my 5 year old niece's favorite song. We lost her last summer in a beach accident and I cannot hear it without sobbing now.

Rain by Patty Griffin

When the Music's Not Forgotten by Deadman

Songbird by Fleetwood Mac

I'll Be Home For Christmas (various artists)

Mi Viejo - Vicente Fernandez

I'll be fine for most of the song but at that last half minute brother! I hear the pain in his voice and I tear up.

Puno De Tierra - Antonio Aguilar

My Tata's (Grandpa's) favorite song. I hear it and I tear up sometimes, if I focus on it. He passed away 10-01-2007. He was the main male figure in my life.

Both songs actually remind me of him.

Chills:

Time After Time - Frank Sinatra
When or Where - Frank Sinatra

"THE POWER! The sheer force that is his voice! THE VOICE!"

Embraceable You - Frank Sinatra

Just hearing him say "Don't be a naughty baby... Come to papa come to papa do..." *SIGH* A bobbysoxer's dream!

Lady Is A Tramp - Frank Sinatra

I get multiple cases of the shivers whenever I see this part!

I suppose I'm just very susceptible to Frankie songs. lol

I'm sure there're others.

But, till then...

'I want you' by Moloko, I can enjoy the song today but at the time it came out I was hopelessly in love with my lover, but the deep feelings was never returned and the song describes exactly how I felt at the time - and yes I would cry when I heard it (after we stopped seeing each other).

Sanvean by Lisa Gerrard. I start tearing up within the first five bars...
She has, quite possibly, the most amazing voice I've ever heard. Anyone who's familiar with the soundtrack to Gladiator should recognize her.

And can't beat Jo Stafford for singing them. QUOTE]

I forgot about Jo Stafford! "He's Gone Away" gets me every time - you're right about her voice, singing almost anything - jeez if I was in the right mood I bet even "Timtayshun" might make me squirt a few tears!

Well.....I have a long list on this one. Nothing affects me quite like music does. I'm one of those wierd people who would be perfectly comfortable living in a musical :). Good thing I have the theater! But here are a few. All are pretty much anthems to me. They describe very specific points of my life or my personality.

As Time Goes By
I can't watch Casablanca now without thinking of a certain person and getting a bit sad. I think he knows why.

You Move Me - Garth Brooks
This was the song that my husband and I danced to at our wedding. Whenever I hear it, I just get flooded with memories.

Calling All Angels - Train
This one more makes me smile than cry. One of my really good friends used to call me angel. More tongue in cheek than anything else but still. This was the ringtone he'd assigned to me. He was always there to protect me and I don't get to talk to him a lot anymore because his wife thinks I'm out to replace her.

I Alone - Live
Run to the Water - Live
Everything Changes - Staind.
Excess Baggage - Staind
Crashed - Daughtry
Home - Daughtry

My Immortal - Evanescence
There's just too much in there that parallels

Good Enough -Evanescence
Anyone who really knows me can appreciate why this song is me. And it makes me cry everytime I hear it.

Nearer My God To Thee.
I sang this at my Father-in-Law's funeral. It reminds me of him now.

God Be With You Till We Meet Again
I sang this one at my Father-in-Law's funeral too. But more than that, for some strange reason we always find ourselves singing this song on the last Sunday before my husband leaves for deployments. And once again when he left two weeks ago for his third OIF tour we got to Church and this was up on the board as the closing hymn. We have a tradition that he wears his dress uniform to church on his last sunday and there is just something about singing that song and seeing him in uniform that just kills me every time.
