Hello Melly and all~
We got to talking about Titanic on another thread so I thought I'd start one here.
I collect clothing from 1860-1970+. I have a few gowns from the Titanic Era but I also love the frocks from the film. I've had the flying gown made, you can see pics here. (I tried to find the thread I had on this once without luck).

I had this gown made to celebrate my weight loss.
I went all out on this one, silk velvet~the works. The orignal gown that this was fashioned from was black and belonged to the wife of a high up political man in PA. When I first got my pc years ago, I didn't know how to save pics and I had found one of this original gown. I haven't found it since. :(
We used the simplicity retro pattern OOP 8640, but altered it quite a bit. We used a pattern from 1910 for the skirt. My seamstress is great and all I have to do is draw out or tell her what I want.

Other than that, I like to take dresses that are pre-made and make them into the dresses I want. Since I'm such a Titanic and Gone With the Wind fan, that's a lot!
Here are other Titanic albums. I hope these links work, as I just moved all my pics from yahoo to flickr.

Vintage edwardian blouse, skirt from JC Penny's. Coat from the bay and I intend to make it look more like Rose's. Wow, I've lost like 25 pounds since these pics were taken! (81 total!):D

I want to make our upstairs hallway mimic Titanic's. You can see here in the last few pics of the album.

*sigh*
Last night I dreamed that the Titanic had been rebuilt and that I saw it meeting with the QM2 in a dark lonely harbour (and then I threw a pair of saltwater scallawags off the pier). Then I went aboard and spotted a few familiar faces...

Stunning gowns miss!

Absolutely stunning, Nikki! You just don't stop, do you? :D

Would you, by some chance, also be a fan of Somewhere in Time? Some of the dresses Jane Seymour wears in this movie are absolutely beautiful. (The entire movie is beautiful.) Especially the dress on the homepage of this site.

I have one of the original theater posters - not a reprint. :)

Yes, Mr. Newport~ I've got Somewhere in Time. Great flick. Would love to visit the Grand Hotel! I have a pattern sort of like her blue dress I'd like to try. Reeves in that tight brown pinstriped suit was a hoot!
I've heard the white gown was stolen before filming ended, http://www.costumegallery.com/classroom/Penny/Class1/demo.htm
It's the very last pic, but Traci from Movie Gowns has done a costume repro of it,
http://www.moviegowns.com/oldercreations.html
She also does great Titanic repros. (She didn't do mine tho)

Of course that counts Diamondback! I have several books and models as well. Now if I had more time to go back and read more of the details. Why do I have to be interested in so many things, I feel I can never get enough info!

That's a really lovely reproduction of the flying dress Nikki--and that corset is to die for! Nice to see the butterfly comb; is it the Peterman version? You really do resemble Kate too.

And 81 pounds! Good on you!

Thanks Old Fashioned!
I'll have to sell the corset because it's too big for me now!
I made the butterfly comb, you can see instructions in that same album. I have a friend who makes combs that I think are better than the Peterman and resonably priced! http://www.shoptitaniconline.com/
Ah.. wait, just found that Traci Arnold has them cheaper on the bay! (moviegowns)
She's (I mean Jill) has also done a few gowns.
I've asked her to do some repro Gone With the Wind jewelry and I'm anticipating that!

Gorgeous dresses and you look amazing. You're inspiring me to give WW another try.

I love your Grand Staircase.....but I'm absolutely mad about those brocade shoes you wore to the St. Louis exhibit. Where did you get them?

Titanic Room

I'll have to take pictures of my living room this weekend and I'll post them. Were you trying for the look of the hallways outside the staterooms or the hallway near the grand staircase?
In the meantime, here are some more pics of our Edwardian/Titanic photo shoot, the Civil War shoot and the train station. Please try to ignore my hideous grumpy look for the CW ones. Every woman looked angry back then...they were wearing a corset!! :p

Does having a model, built before James Cameron made the Titanic cool, and several references (same) on a shelf in my bookcase count?

Say, which version do you have? I tried to build a decent replica out of the Revell model (as a replacement for an earlier, also pre-Cameron effort), but the many inaccuracies built into it made it impossible, so it's dry-docked for the moment. Those one piece cast-on railings are a nightmare....

And those are some great pics, missmelly!

Charlie, my build was the old Revell, but now I'm starting to consider the 1:350 Minicraft, or maybe one of the large paper models available--except that there I trade my unsteady painting hand for an unsteady cutting hand.... [unintelligible] tremors... *muttering assorted curses under breath*

For anyone else interested in tackling a build, you might find some useful stuff over at the Titanic Research & Modeling Association.

Gold Medal Models may have aftermarket etched-brass details which could help, but you'll have to cut some plastic. Also, you might wanna check to see if FineScale Modeler has any of their back issues with Titanic coverage left.

Howdy Melly! Again, supperb photos! WOW. You did a wonderful job sewing, and your hairstylist and photographer are spot on. :arated: So regal and dignified!

I actually like wearing corsets, I think they're comfy if they are custum made. I wish I could wear them to work, I have horrible posture and it really helps!

As for my "corridor"... It will be a mixture of everything really. I want the chandelier at the landing of our stairs, kinda like the grand staircase area. What sucks about this is that where the fixture will go we have a huge, ugly attic fan. Oh, and the smoke alarm. So they will be beautifully illuminated, lol! Then the actual hall more like the stateroom area, with a bit more molding to look like the first class parlor suites. I'll do off white instead of white, and our floor is painted wood; I'll just be painting over it. Our hall floor upstairs is unbelievably warped. Not that I'd put tile down over it anyway, but it would never work with this huge bulge we have up there! Put up some hand rails.. can't decide if I want sconces or not. I also love the look of the first class reading room. We still have our parlor and bathrooms to redo, so really the hall will get what ever we have money for, if any! :p

Would love to hear how you and your husband met. I love to see couples enjoying the same things.

Here's our civil war era shot. Tho I am not dressed period at all, this was my wedding dress. This was a year after we were married and my dress was too big so it shows. The gal also had us in a really goofy pose.

More "civil war" pics, tho not period correct.... I'm just a huge GWTW fan! I want to dye my hair back dark and take more pics in this gown. Plus, I need a new hoop so please excuse the sagging!

Here's another Scarlett dress at Halloween last year. My husband is bald and I had a blast turning him into Rhett!

Ooh! Cheaper sources for the butterfly comb--thanks so much! I've always wanted one but the prices at Peterman's were crazy (as usual). I love Traci's site--I visit often. Isn't it the best feeling when an undergarment you used to have to squeeze yourself into is too big? With such a lovely corset it must be bittersweet (but a good excuse to get a new one).

Yes, it is quite bittersweet. I had the corset custom made and wore it ONCE! ACK! My custom Scarlett corset still fits tho, but I had that made small. ;)
I'll probably try and sell the Titanic one on the bay around Halloween.

Ah... this is why I asked! That pattern turns out incredibly maternity like! Rose's gown was barely gathered at all, and the underdress was very sleek. This one is gathered all around the waste and makes a big pouf.

Here's some great info on the patterns.
http://www.sensibility.com/titanic/patternsources/
I would either alter the pattern to take out the bulk, use another pattern for underdress, or try the Vogue 9936. http://lanetzliving.net/inc/sdetail/29488
That's the one I used to cut my overskit. This site shows it done up on the very last pic,
http://www.gbacg.org/GreatPatternReview/Vogue.htm

You can see pics of the simplicity dress done up here, and you'll spot the poufy ones! ;) Click on jump and swim gowns. Also, the waist is too low on the simplicty IMO.

For those of your who are really into Titanic or Edwardian gowns you might like this group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/titanicdresses/?yguid=176526472

If you're into redoing dresses like me, you can usually find the Morgan and Co. dress and the Faviana dress on the bay. The one I took to Branson was the Morgan and Co. Britteny Spears wore the Faviana to her prom, lol!
