What type of neckwear?

Hello folks,

after having read along for quite a time, I have finally registered due to a question that I hope will be answered here:

What kind of neckwear might the gentleman in the photo be wearing? I have thought of some type of ascot, but I would like to gather some other opinions.

Yes, some kind of Ascot or cravat.

And a very badly fitted waistcoat, but that's besides the point.

Cravates go round the neck and under the shirt, protruding above the collar.

A cravat is simply a name for a neck cloth, of any sort. A stock is a cravat. A necktie is a cravat. As is a bowtie, and so with a Tootal or Duggie-style neckwear.

If it`s a formal cravat it goes under the collar and outside the shirt like the OP`s picture shows. The final step would be to tuck it behind the wasitcoat.
A more casual or "day cravat" is tied as you have described.

I think the tie above looks quite good. Quite bold. The waistcoat is awful.
