Beautiful cafes. Vertical twin, clip-ons, solo seat. Doesn't get any better than that.

Anyway, did some off-roading over the weekend in NW New Jersey.

Hello,
Here is mine, hope you like it as much as I like riding it ! Its name is BLUEGRASS EXPRESS and my wife had it custom-built for me for my 50th birthday. It's a 2008 S&S Panhead 96 ci engine put in a 1992 Harley Davidson softail frame with a lot of special tricks on it. I've got a nice wife, don't ya think ?

Here's a question for all you Hog owners out there...as I've never ridden one...

In terms of ride, how do the Sportsters differ over the big softails?
 
She's so generous with me cause I probably deserve it (ha, ha, ha )
Speaking about difference between Softails and Sportsters, in my opinion of a 20 years HD rider, I think they have 2 different functions. I crossed the USA on my 2003 Night Train Softail from San Francisco to Baltimore in 2003 with a 7000 miles trip (11 National Parks, Sturgis, 100th HD Anniversary in Milwaukee, ...) and everything turned out fine. I would never had made that on a Sportster which is more of what we call (wrongly most of the time) a sort of Cafe Racer which was originally built to run from a bar to another bar, within a city and was never built for the long road. Some friends of mine ride their Sportster on long trips but they are usually more exhausted than me whe we arrive to our destination. I would love to have both but since I cannot ride it at the same time, there's no use ... A bientôt.

I keep dropping hints about moving to the states. Using the "it's cheaper than here" line (which a lot of the USA is...the UK is so damn expensive!!!). But in reality it's so we can save money on the mortgage which I can spend on a Harley. HAHAHAHA

There are no standard lines about Sportsters and big twins. Ive ridden Sportsters long distances with no problems and Ive ridden big twins (the worst being a stock heritage softail) that left my body a wreck after a short time. It depends mostly on the seat, shocks, and handlebars. bion, how far forward you lean makes a big difference in how your whole body feels after a ride, my opinion of 'how far forward is best' notwithstanding.

Sportster Vs Bonneville

The new Sportster has a rubber mounted engine, and is a whole different animal compared to their older relatives! It is heavier and slower turning, but just fine for flatland ridding. For me the last of the EVO Sportster were the best, then again, I came off Brit Iron, talk about vibration. Funny, over 40 years ridding, and Sportsters are the only Harley product I have ever enjoyed ridding! If you want to do the Iron Butt, get a BMW, 1000 miles, just another morning ride! Then again, a new Triumph Bonneville will out cool any Harley, and you can ride it an easy 500 miles in a day! Of course I have a 2002 Sportster Cafe and a 2004 Bonnie, plus some other bikes, all are more fun then being stuck in the old iron cage.

Ok, I know you've seen it before but I wanted to show it again in HDR (High Dynamic Range). I just photographed my
1999 Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster out in front of the house at sundown yesterday to see how it looked after a solid clean-up.
Dazzling, wouldn't you say!!??

1973 Triumph Bonneville 750

This was my first street bike. My dad and I restored it; I wish I had some before pictures. The pics were in 2001 and taken just prior to selling the bike. A little small for me, I used the money to get a new 2001 H.D. Fatboy. Take note to all the Stainless Steel Machine Screws he made to replace everything that was there on the engine.

Here're a couple of my projects. A '99 Royal Enfield 500 Bullet, right side shift, Dunstall style exhaust, Ace air filter to free it up. These bikes were manufactured in India virtually unchanged since 1955. It's like finding a factory that still makes '57 Chevies.

The Sportster is a '77 ironhead. It's currently being reassembled in the guise of a late 50's XLR flat track racer/K Model. Solo seat, orange with white stripe paint, wide flat-track bars and ceramic coated drag pipes. No turn signals, no front fender, one mirror.

I also have a '78 R80/7 BMW and a '72 CB500-4 Honda. That's about as vintage as I can afford. Wish I could find an Indian Chief basket case! (As for cars-love to own a Checker Marathon someday.)

Besides the bikes I'm into old woodworking tools and machinery as well as vintage leather motorcycle and flight jackets. I have a small collection of blackpowder hoglegs as well. Explosions are fun!

Here's a shot of the family from last summer. the bronze '71 Commando has since moved on to a new home, and the alloy '65 Atlas is up on the bench to finally be completed. The car in the garage is a '75 Triumph TR6.
