David: Lydia has a great eye, and I compliment her constantly, although Ryan has been taking some great photos lately as well. Hard to believe, I know, but I actually take far more pictures of the two of them, than they do of me. lol
Jeff: At age 82, Bernard Haitink was still as magnificent as he ever was, and his interpretation of Brahms elegant and supremely noble, but unfortunately we felt that the symphony was marred by the CSO's dynamic inbalance between the overly brash horns and the indifferent strings. Unforgivable offenses for this most exalted and emotionally profound masterwork, in my humble opinion. Nonetheless we enjoyed the concert, and Emanuel Ax was fabulous.
Alan: It breaks my heart to hear about the seemingly inexorable loss of historic architecture in Buffalo. I suppose urban renewal and the inevitable cycle of economic decline and revitalization take their toll. To me, this irreversible loss is just as painful to bear as the loss of Amazonian rain forest or the wholesale extinction of animal species, for example, and should really be thought of in that context.
Josh: You are right, of course. The trend of urbanization and young families moving back to the city from suburbia has breathed new life into long neglected neighborhoods, but unenlightened and insensitive 'rehabbing' has resulted in loss of architectural integrity in many cases. In our experience, Chicago has the highest concentration of architectural salvage firms, more even than New York City, helping to preserve at least some of the irreplaceable artifacts. We have myriad pieces of Chicago in our home to testify to that fact.

Robert: I agree with your observation, sadly. However, I believe Chicagoans, perhaps with the memory of the Great Fire of 1871 indelibly burned into their collective mindset, are more aware of, and sensitive to, their city's historical and architectural legacy, compared with their counterparts in the other major urban centers of America. I cringe to think about all that has been lost, but would note that Chicago's tremendous economic vitality in the past, as now, has allowed for a greater percentage of these treasures to be preserved there, than elsewhere. Our architectural antique dealer friends from Michigan and Ohio would agree, as many of them have lamented to us their inability to stem the tide of destruction that continues.

Al; Thanks for the pictoral of your recent visit to Chicago. Your description/pics of the visit penetrate past the cover of big city life, noise/speed and the buildings overhead. Your example of taking time to look ALL around and under the cover reminds all of us of the complexities and history of our cities legacy. MPLS/ST.Paul, our home area, IMO, has many real gems. "Your Chicago" is clearly quite a city.

Thank you for your generous and wise comments, Eric! I love our Twin Cities, and agree that we have much to appreciate. Throughout this thread I have attempted to document what I found to be compelling or beautiful, wherever we may be.
