VS felt color comparison Part IV

I haven't come across a Blue Smoke & Dove side-by-side closeup, so here's one.

Blue Smoke (right) & Dove (left):

Granite vs. Blue Smoke might be of interest, too. The topic came up a couple of times.

Granite felt sample on VS Blue Smoke (the ribbon is black):

Granite is an almost neutral gray with a shift towards the brownish side of the spectrum.
It looks brownish when compared to bluish grays, and grayish when compared to more taupe colors.

Granite felt sample on an early 1940s Stetson 3X in taupe (grayish brown); the windcord is medium brown:

Yes that granite uses it's surrounding to define itself. I think granite exhibits a chameleon characteristic with it's surroundings, I have a granite Fedora from Art, and it's clever how it manages to fit in color-wise, in a complimentary way, with a lot of clothes color combinations. (wow - I must have my alliteration switch on!). And depending on the lighting I'm in, can look like another color entirely. I mean, that granite sample on the Taupe makes the granite look almost Blue Smokish.

Think I'll wear it tonight!

There must be two schools of thought as to what the view of a hat's bow side would be... lol

Too true! :) A pun approacheth . . . wait for it . . .

"A shot off the bow"?

Art, you're within a 3-hour range for me, so fair warning, I may take you up on that visit. Dreamy workshop you have there.

Thanks for posting the picture. I am thinking of having one made in sunset, and a lot of the photos that have been posted (of lighter-coloured hats) look a lot lighter than the felt samples. That one looks pretty close to what I want.

dnjan, IMO you can absolutely rely on the felt samples; photos, however, are always dependent on lighting conditions. I'm sure most pics here are pretty accurate when considering the respective lighting conditions in which they were taken. Still, only the person who took the frame will really know what these conditions were like.
It may be useful to hold the small felt samples next to different felts or other fabrics that you own (other hats, suits, shirts, it doesn't really matter which). That might help to reveal the differences between the felt dyes.

I was wondering how much was colour-rendering errors from either the camera or my monitor, and how much was size effect. Sometimes looking at a small coloured piece up close has a different effect from looking at a larger piece (the whole hat) from a distance.

so far I have checked out the small felt samples with two of the jackets I would probably wear with the hat - one jacket to check yet (which is not stored where I am currently living). Hat would be for a trip next September, so I have some time yet.

I am currently working with Art to have a panama reblocked to fit my head shape. I think I must have spent my entire time as a baby sleeping on the same side of my head. Art sent me the block he made from the conformer, and it was horribly asymmetrical! Once I get the block oriented correctly as to the apparent front of my head, he will be re-blocking/re-flanging the hat.

I believe there's a minimum number of posts you need before being able to show actual photos.

Incidentally, that is a sweet, sweet lid. Depp would be proud! What does Mr. Fawcett call those felt and ribbon colors?

Welcome, and what an entrance to this forum!

There's no minimum, you can can post pics from the very first post. Upload them on an image hosting site and copy & paste the IMG code into the message texts. There's photobucket, imageshack, tinypic and many others. Some don't even require a login for uploading files, like tinypic.

Thanks bowlerman!

I'm not sure what the colors were, I left that judgement call up to art, I requested whatever he thought was closest to the source

got it fixed, thanks rabbit =D

Glad you like it! Here's some more closeups. The color mojave is hard to capture, as many of you know. These shots (including last post) were all taken shortly before and at sunset. The first one below and the ribbon closeup posted earlier are a little warmer than in real life; the others seem to be rather accurate as far as I can tell.
